A step backward, but still quite a good album Therion – Deggial Release date: January, 31st, 2000 Track list: 1. Seven Secrets of the Sphinx 2. Eternal Return 3. Enter Vril-Ya 4. Ship of Luna 5. The Invincible 6. Deggial 7. Emerald Crown 8. The Flight of the Lord of Flies 9. Flesh of the Gods 10.Via Nocturna (Part I: The Path + Part II: Hexentanz) 11.O Fortuna (Carl Orff cover) In 2000, Symphonic metal master Therion released Deggial. They continued to build their classical symphonic style of music in this album. In fact, in Deggial, the classical influences are more than their previous albums Vovin and Theli. However, this time I have to admit that Deggial has been below the standard of Therion. Therion always present amazing releases which can totally attract me, but these are apparently not including Deggial. I’ve been listened to this album many times, but I’m still not able to like it. I hate to say that, but sadly enough, it’s a truth. One of the reasons why I say Therion fail to maintain their standard is that, they are usually able to create inspiring music, which can astonish me at the first time. And their music always has incredible creativities which surprise me a lot. Unfortunately, Deggial doesn’t recapture this kind of magic in Vovin or even in Theli. In this album, most of the melodies are good, but not so impressive. The operatic vocals are fantastic as usual, but the choruses aren’t very memorable. The classical arrangements are great, but sometimes they didn’t fit with metal well. The opener “Seven Secrets of Sphinx” is a little bit mediocre, and this is the first time I feel a Therion’s song mediocre. Worst of all, some of the songs are a little bit boring and too long, and this feeling never appears in other Therion’s releases. For example, every time I listen to “Via Nocturna”, I always tend to lose my attention. Therion usually good at arrange their longer songs, but this time they didn’t do well. Another reason of failure is that, the using of classical elements are not as good as their other albums. In Deggial, classical is the biggest part of the music, but most of the melodies are not as amazing as Vovin, let alone to compare with Theli. They usually able to balance classical and metal very well, but in Deggial, some of the guitar riffs are pointless. It just like they didn’t consider whether it should be added or not, they just want to have a guitar sound in their music, and that’s all. Also, bass and drum performances are competent but faceless in this album, too. Because of these reasons, I just can’t force myself to say that I like Deggial. But after all, Deggial is a Therion’s album. They never release a really bad album, and Deggial has no exception. There are some true gems in Deggial, to make it not completely worthless. For example, the last part of “Eternal Return” is pretty headbanging, the melodies of “Ship of Luna” is as beautiful as songs in Vovin, “Emerald Crown” and “Flesh of the Gods” are outstanding progressive symphonic metal songs, which are my personal favorites. The album-titled song “Deggial” is also a high-quality Therion standard song, with memorable chorus and wonderful operatic vocal performances. The last 2 minutes of “Via Nocturna” reminds me the tremendous musical creativity of Therion, it has the most beautiful melodies and emotional vocals in this album. And at the end of the album, we’ve got the best song on Deggial: “O Fortuna” . It’s a cover of a world famous song composed by Carl Orff, and it’s one of the best covers of this song I’ve ever heard. It has majestic atmosphere, beautiful acoustic guitar, bombastic operatic chorus, and proper heavy metal element. Therion successfully turn an original operatic classical anthem into a metal song. This cover contents every essential factors of this all-time classic. Although it’s a bonus track, but there is no any excuse for you to miss it. The production is also very good, at least Therion never produce an album with bad sound quality. Although this is by far their weakest effort, Deggial is still quite a good album. It’s not inspiring at my first listen, and it will never be one of my favorite Therion albums, but it’s still acceptable. If you are new to Therion, I recommend you to get their other albums instead of this one. If you want to give Deggial a try, just don’t expect it too much. Overall , Deggial is a listenable album. It's good, but not extraordinary. 全專輯試聽: Seven Secrets of the Sphinx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4cupPWTzZA
