Akron’s ‘Ripper’ Owens reflects on his days as Judas Priest frontman

Canton - It was a chain of events almost too perfect to be real.

Tim Owens, a guy who can outscream most banshees, was singing in an
Akron-based Judas Priest tribute band called British Steel.

名為British Steel的Judas Priest致敬樂團演唱。

Then, as fate would have it, he was hired in 1996 to replace Judas Priest’s
vocalist Rob Halford, who’d quit the then-dormant band four years earlier.

Nicknamed “Ripper” after a Priest song, Owens toured the world with Judas
Priest through 2002, releasing two studio albums, two live albums and a
concert DVD. His stint ended when Halford rejoined the band in 2003.

Since that time, Owens has been busy with a range of projects. He has
recorded and toured with Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force, Iced Earth, Beyond
Fear and as a solo artist. He just finished a Ronnie James Dio tribute tour,
and is now frontman for Charred Walls of the Damned. He also is co-owner of
Ripper Owens’ Tap House, a rock ‘n’ roll-themed bar and restaurant in
south Akron.

A nice, funny guy who lives in Green with his wife and two young children,
Owens, 44, is happy to reflect on his days as lead screamer for Judas Priest.

Q. What knowledge did you glean from your stint with Judas Priest?
你在Judas Priest的那段歲月中學到了什麼呢？

A. How to drive a car in England... No really, I just learned to be myself,
not some L.A. rock star. Be good to the fans and all will be good.  
如何在英國開車……不是啦，我學會到了要當我自己，而不是某個洛杉磯搖滾樂明星。對

Q. Is there any chance you will be onstage with the band again — like in
Cleveland?
你有可能再度跟該團同台嗎──像是在Cleveland那樣？

A. I would love to, but it won’t happen. But I think fans would love it.  
我很樂意，但那是不可能的。不過我想歌迷會很高興。

Q. How scary was it hitting the stage in Rob Halford’s spot on your first
Priest tour?
首次接替Rob Halford的位置，站在舞台上與Judas Priest巡迴的感覺，有多恐怖？

A. I wasn’t really that scared. I knew it was made for me, I could be myself
and it fit the bill. As long as I sang like I could, I would be fine. All I
wanted was to make myself happy, because I am a (Judas Priest) fan, and I
know what I want as a fan.
我倒沒有很害怕，我知道演唱會是為我辦的，我可以做我自己，而不會顯得突兀。只要我
盡力唱，那就沒有問題。我只想讓自己唱得快樂，因為我是個（Judas Priest的）歌迷，
我知道身為歌迷想要什麼。

Q. Were you well accepted by the Priest fans?
Judas Priest的歌迷們接受你嗎？

A. I think when the fans heard (the album) “Jugulator,” they knew JP had a
singer that could do it. But I think I sold most (of) them on the live shows.
As K.K. (Downing, guitarist) always said about me, proof is in the pudding!
But in the end, Rob needed to come back, and I needed to spread my wings,
and, I gotta say, it has really worked out for both of us!
我想當歌迷聽到Jugulator（專輯）時，他們知道Judas Priest有了個實力堅強的主唱。
但我想是我在演唱會上的表現，說服了他們大多數人。就像K.K. （Downing，吉他手）提

Q. Have you kept in touch with the guys?

A. Yes, I have. I’m friends with all of them, including Rob. I try not to
burn bridges. You never know when I might have to cross that water again.

Q. How do you feel about Judas Priest coming to an end?

A. I don’t think it is the end so there really isn’t any need talking about
it!

Q. How is it that Judas Priest hasn’t been inducted into the Rock Hall of
Fame?
你對Judas Priest沒被列入搖滾樂名人堂這件事怎麼看呢？

A. I don’t know, strange isn’t it? GnR and not JP! It is just silly! Lets
hope someday, right?  
我不知道，很奇怪，不是嗎？Guns N' Roses入選而不是Judas Priest，真的很蠢。希望
有朝一日他們會進名人堂，對吧？

Q. What was your favorite song of Judas Priest’s to sing live?
你最喜歡演唱哪首Judas Priest的歌呢？

A. “Bloodstained” was always great, “Victim of Changes” was as well! I
loved all of them. I really enjoyed the ones from my era. It meant a lot to
me and they challenged my vocals a bit more!  
Bloodstained這首歌一直都很讚，Victim of Changes也是！我全都愛。我很喜歡我在團
內時的那些歌，他們對我別具意義，而且對我的歌喉也更具挑戰性。

Q. Did you become known as Ripper when you joined Judas Priest, or was that
your nickname already?
你是加入Judas Priest之後才被稱為Ripper，還是之前就有這個綽號了？

A. Yes, when I joined. Before that, I was the Flipper because I swam with
dolphins. Okay, kidding on that! I sang the song “Ripper” when I auditioned
and bam, I became Ripper Owens, and I love it.
對，是我加入後的事。之前我的綽號叫魚鰭仔（Flipper），因為我都和海豚一起游泳。
好啦，開玩笑的。我去應徵時唱了Ripper這首歌，接著我就變成” Ripper Owens”了，
我很喜歡這個綽號。

Q. Will Judas Priest be visiting the Tap House next week?
Judas Priest下週會造訪Tap House（譯按： Judas Priest於11/5將於同在俄亥俄州的克
里夫蘭市開唱）嗎？

A. Hahahaha. You never know, would be nice wouldn’t it? Other bands do! Ask
Glenn yourself, tell him how much you love it!
哈哈，誰知道呢？這樣一定會很棒不是嗎？其他樂團都這麼做。你親自去問Glenn吧，告
訴他你有多希望他們會來！
