run our plays well. We did not execute well. We keep saying that from the
first games of the season until now and in two weeks playoffs will start. We’
re still not executing well.”

I would say every game we probably have 15 or 20 possessions that the play is
ran to the wrong place, or when all five guys know the play there is only
about 12 seconds left (on the shot clock). That’s our biggest problem right
now. It (happens) too many times.

RON ARTEST

(on tonight’s game compared to their last face off against the Lakers):

“I thought they were the better team tonight. You have to give them credit
where credit is due. I mean we rebounded well and got a couple offensive
rebounds. I think we played better tonight because the last time we came here
when they made their run and the arena got so loud, we started to rush. We
showed more poise and that’s why at the end of the game it seemed kind of
boring. We just didn’t give in or get out of control. It was too late and
they built a good lead but we stayed with it and got better tonight. I feel
good about this game.”

SHANE BATTIER

(on team’s gearing up for the playoffs):“If you look historically at the
teams that play in the championship, they build their level of play every
game and as the season approaches the playoffs they’re pretty sharp and have
an edge to them when the playoffs start.”

(on his team’s breakdown):

“We didn’t play well enough to win this game. Kobe wasn’t aggressive. I
know when Kobe’s aggressive. He was working on getting his teammates
involved. He hit two big shots; those two threes there were a breakdown in
our pick-and-roll coverages and against the best teams in the leagues, and
the Lakers are one of the best, that’s when you need to be especially sharp.
We weren’t and that’s often the difference.”

(on the Lakers ability to own the fourth quarter against Houston):Execution.
They’re a very good executing team. They get what they want in terms of
shots and it seems like we’re still struggling to get the shots we want.

(on the defense):I thought as a team we were solid. They shot 39% and didn’t
really hurt us on the offensive boards. So we played solid enough defense, we
just didn’t have any offensive flow or continuity on the offensive end to
really put pressure on them.

I think it’s a trademark of a young team. To go on the road and play a
desperate team in Phoenix and not really bring our defense, then to come here
and bring our defense but not really bring our offense, I think it still says
we’re an immature team in a lot of ways. The mature teams come on this road
trip with a mindset and they play aggressive and play their game, and they
take the results. And we didn’t play our game in either game, so we still
have room to grow.
