Hayes brings a little bit of Magic
But forward knows role isn’t to provide flash

SALT LAKE CITY – Chuck Hayes had spoken long and well of the virtues of
playing one’s own game, of not trying to be someone else, especially when
filling in for a key part of the rotation as he has for Carl Landry.

海爺談到了很多關於打屬於自己的比賽，而不是去成為另一個人，尤其是填補輪替中
重要一員的缺席，像是蘭蘭。

Then he found himself with the ball on the middle of the court, with an open
floor in front of him and his point guard behind.

而他發現他在中場帶著球，前場是空的，而控衛還在他後面。

The guy determined that he would not try to be Landry turned into Magic
Johnson.

於是他決定，他不當 Landry了，他要當 Magic Johnson。

"It was an out-of-body experience," Hayes said of the stunning fast break he
led Sunday in San Antonio. "I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. I went
for the gamble on the steal. Kyle (Lowry) came over to contest the (Drew
Gooden) shot, so there was nobody to outlet to. I took two dribbles and I saw
Von (Wafer) had his head turned, so I said, "I guess I have to take it
myself."

談到對馬刺的比賽那個嚇死人的快攻，海爺說："這真是個靈魂出竅的經驗。我真不知道
當時我是瘋了還怎樣怎麼會做這種事，我嘗試著賭博性的抄球，而羅莉跑去干擾 Gooden
的投籃，所以當時我根本沒人可以傳球。我運了兩下球結果看到 Wafer轉過頭了，所以我
想說，我猜我得自己來了。"

Hayes took the ball down the middle of the floor, looked to Wafer on his
right then passed to Luis Scola on his left for the layup.

海爺自己將球運過半場，看著他右邊的 Wafer，然後把球傳給了在他左邊的 Scola。

The Spurs called timeout and Hayes quickly heard from his stunned teammates.

"They were like, "Oh, Chuck, where did that come from,’ " Hayes said.

於是馬刺叫了暫停，然後海爺就聽到他嚇到的隊友在說："歐天阿 Chuck，你是從哪冒
出來的?"

He did not know, but said he he is determined to otherwise restrict himself
to his usual strengths: defending, rebounding, setting screens and firing
occasional high-post passes.

海爺自己也不知道他從哪冒出來的，不過他說他決定他要限制自己只做自己擅長做的事
就好。像是防守、搶籃板、幫隊友做掩護，還有偶爾從高位傳球。

Landry, who went out after last week’s gunshot wound, brings a far more
well-rounded offensive game. Hayes, however, said he has learned over the
years to not try to be someone else.

Landry為火箭帶來的是更多元的進攻。但是海爺說："在過去的兩年裡，他已經學會了
不要成為別人，做自己就好。"

"My whole mindset when I go in is, don’t try to do too much or play above
what I’m here to do,’ " Hayes said. "Do what I can at those points of the
game. Know the time and score and situations. Be aggressive. Set the screen.
Go for second-chance points. But my role does not change.

海爺說："當我上場時，我的心態是:不要嘗試著做太多或是去做一些我不該做的事。
我只要把當下份內的事情做好就好:了解場上狀況、讓自己有侵略性、幫隊友做掩護、
搶進攻籃板。我的角色從來沒有改變過。"

"I had to learn that. It was after my second year."

"這是在我的第二年後我得去學習的事。" (應該是說變成替補吧....)

He has had ample opportunity to learn that lesson, having filled in for
teammates as varied as Yao Ming, Stromile Swift and Juwan Howard over the
years.

這幾年來他有很多機會去學習補上隊友的空缺，像是姚明、Swift，還有 Juwan Howard。

"Being on this team for four years now, there’s been a whole lot of
injuries," Hayes said. "My numbers have been called. They just tell me to do
what I do. I just need to do it for a longer period of time."

海爺說："在這支球隊呆了四年，傷兵實在太多了。當我被派上場時，他們希望我做
我該做的事，只是我要打久一點而已。"

As a rookie, Hayes beat out Swift for playing time, then succeeded Howard as
the starting power forward. With Scola’s and Landry’s emergence, he has
been more of a defensive specialist, asked to come off the bench to cool off
streak-shooting power forwards from LaMarcus Aldridge to Dirk Nowitzki.

在新秀時期，海爺就從 Swift那裡得到上場時間，之後又取代了 Howard成為先發PF。
但在 Scola還有 Landry出現後，他的角色變成了專職的防守員，讓他從替補上來守住
一些投爽爽的PF像是 LaMarcus Aldridge 還有 Dirk Nowitzki。

His increased playing time with Landry out comes at a time he might have been
used anyway to defend Tim Duncan and the Jazz’s Carlos Boozer and Mehmet
Okur.

Landry缺席後，海爺上場的時間會增加在要他來防守像是TD、boo還有 Okur上面。

"He’d be playing against a lot of people who are high-scoring fours,"
Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "The only thing that it does affect is the
fact that both he and Deke (Mutombo) are not offensive players so I have to
juggle that as far as having those two on the court together. That’s not the
best thing for us offensively. We just have to judge it and juggle it and see
if we can’t get a rotation where either Luis or Yao is on the floor, or you
have Ron (Artest) at the four spot."

Adelman說："海爺已經對過很多會得分的PF了，不過唯一影響到他跟老木上場時間的
一件事就是他們倆都不擅於進攻，所以我沒辦法讓他們同時在場上，這對我們的進攻
來說不是件好事。所以他們只能在姚明或 Scola不在輪替的時候上場，不然就是要讓
阿泰去打4號。

In addition to his flashy assists, Hayes did put in a few reverses against
the Spurs. That might not be his strength, but like the fast break, if the
chance comes he thought he would make the best of it.

除了海爺驚人的幾個助攻以外，在對上馬刺時，他還嘗試了幾次他不太擅長的反手上籃。
雖然他不擅長，但是就跟那次的快攻一樣，要是機會來了，他認為他可以嘗試做到最好。

"I got to be crafty," Hayes said. "I’m undersized (6-foot-6). I’m not going
to outjump anybody. I have to find a way to get it up there on the glass. It’
s part of the game. Just do it in your role."

海爺說："我是該變的狡猾點，我已經undersize了，又沒辦法跳的比別人高，所以我得
找些方法讓自己進球，這是比賽的一部份，就是去做你該做的事。

That, despite a highlight to the contrary, is the idea with the latest
increase in his role.

而最近這些特別的表現，雖然不是他擅長的東西，不過卻幫他的角色增加了一點新東西。

"It’s about being a professional and being ready," Hayes said. "Then, go do
what you do."

海爺說："其實就是讓自己變的專業還有隨時都做好準備，然後，就去做自己該做的事!"
