catcher in 166 of his 362 big-league games; in the
others, he played outfield, first base or designated
hitter . . . Last season, threw out 16 of 54 runners
attempting to steal . . . Converted from outfielder to
catcher after his first year in pro ball.
‧ Personal: Signed with the California Angels after being selected in the 12th
round of the 1993 draft from Georgia Southern University . . .
Originally was chosen out of high school by Atlanta in the 27th
round of the 1989 draft, but he did not sign . . . A member of
Team USA that played in the 1991 Pan American Games . . . Greene
and wife Vanessa have two children, Aryn, 8, and Jacob, 5.
‧ Who had the biggest impact on your career?
"Two people, Bill Lachemann and John McNamara. They taught me how
to catch in the Angels system. The Angels reached a point where
they wanted to move me back to the outfield or try me at third
base, but those two were certain I could make it as a catcher.
Unfortunately, I had an arm injury that slowed me down, but they
worked with me to come back from the injury. I know they were
proud of me. I was their project."
