             with the New York Mets and Los Angeles.

‧ Status: Projected to start in left field but can play center and right if
           needed.

‧ Career highlights: Selected to -National League All-Star team in 1999 . . .
                      Has hit 30 or more home runs in five of past seven
                      seasons . . . One of eight NL players with five
                      30- home-run seasons since 1998, joining Barry Bonds,
                      Sammy Sosa, Todd Helton, Jeff Bagwell, Vladimir Guerrero,
                      Mike Piazza and Andruw Jones.

‧ Personal: Grew up in Conroe, Texas, but lives in Poway, Calif., outside
             San Diego, with wife Krissy and three children, the youngest of
             whom was born this week . . . Led Oklahoma State to College World
             Series championship game in 1990 . . . Originally signed with New
             York Mets as a first-round draft choice out of OSU in June 1990.

‧ Who had the biggest impact on your career?
             "I pretty much felt you go this one alone. I'm not saying I
              haven't had a lot of helps from teammates and staff along the
              way. There are teammates you appreciate and follow their example,
              but as far as one guy who was bigger than anyone else, no way. It
              hasn't been that way for me."
