Trade brings reliever Kim to Rockies

It took four months and hundreds of phone calls, but the Rockies finally
acquired reliever Byung-Hyun Kim Wednesday in exchange for catcher Charles
Johnson and triple-A pitcher Chris Narverson.

The Rockies will be responsible for less than $400,000 of his $6 million
salary, making it worth the risk, according to general manager Dan O’Dowd.

“He’s someone we want to take a flier on,” O’Dowd said. “You never get a
guy like this when he’s going good. But he’s not that far removed from being
an all-star and a dominant young closer.”

Johnson knew he was going to be traded when the club didn’t provide him
luggage for the upcoming road to trip to New Mexico and Colorado Springs. With
the Red Sox set at catcher with Jason Varitek and Doug Mirabelli, Johnson is
expected to be released with Tampa Bay his likely destination as a free agent.

Narverson was acquired from the Cardinals on Aug. 7 as part of the Larry Walker
trade. He went 0-3 with a 3.15 ERA in four starts four Double-A Tulsa and had
been earmarked for Triple-A Colorado Springs this season.

However, Johnson won't play a game for the Red Sox. Upon making the
transaction, the Sox designated Johnson for assignment and then released him.
Johnson is expected to wind up with the Devil Rays by early next week.

The Red Sox picked up the bulk of Kim's $6 million salary while the Rockies
will pay most of Johnson's salary.

This spring, Kim was throwing mainly in the mid 80s. During his years as a
dominant closer in Arizona, Kim threw in the 90s and had nasty bite to his
pitches.

結果洛磯負擔了Johnson大部分的薪水
用他加一個從Walker的交易得來的小聯盟投手Narveson
(幸好不是DenverPost之前提到的Jason Young)
換來了一個只剩mid 80s的投手，還有高度受傷的風險
可以說對於Johnson的大合約，最後我們幾乎一無所獲
(雖然本來就要認栽了，難怪Devil Rays相信最後Rockies還是會釋出他)
但對Boston來說似乎也差不多?
