Former closer went 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA for Cleveland last season
Lost in the trade talk swirling like a blizzard around pitcher Jason
Jennings, general manager Dan O'Dowd promised a few minor-league,
free-agent additions to bolster the pitching staff.
On the same day that the Rockies lost out in their pursuit of catcher
Rod Barajas, reliever Danny Graves joined a collection of veterans who
will compete for scarce roster spots in spring training. Graves signed
a one-year, $600,000 contract, of which only $78,000 is guaranteed,
according to paperwork filed with the union obtained by The Denver Post.
Graves went 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA with the Cleveland Indians last season.
Per his contract, he can request his release if not on the opening-day
roster. A one-time closer with the Cincinnati Reds, the 33-year-old
right-hander has 182 career saves.
Looking for depth, the Rockies previously added starter Eric Dubose and
reliever Mike Gallo.
Because of concerns about Yorvit Torrealba's multiple shoulder injuries,
Colorado aggressively chased Barajas, who hit 21 home runs in 2005.
Barajas chose the Phillies over the Rockies on Wednesday, signing a
one-year, $2.5-million deal, pending a physical.
His agent said Tuesday night that Barajas was still considering Colorado.
However, Philadelphia is breaking in a young catcher and offers the
potential for more playing time.
