KANSAS CITY -- Left fielder Alex Gordon and right fielder Jeff Francoeur are the only Royals among the finalists for a Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Shortstop Alcides Escobar, who had a spectacular season defensively after being obtained from the Brewers in the Zack Greinke trade, was not an American League finalist. For the first time since the Gold Glove Awards were established in 1957, three finalists in each league were announced for each position and a winner will be picked for each of the three outfield positions instead of three outfielders overall. Another first: The winners will be announced on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. CT on Tuesday. Gordon, a converted third baseman, led the Major Leagues with 20 outfield assists, and Francoeur tied for second with 16 as the Royals' defense improved markedly. Francoeur's 97 assists since 2005 are by far the most in the Majors. Gordon gets competition from the Yankees' Brett Gardner and the Rays' Sam Fuld. Francoeur is joined by the Orioles' Nick Markakis and the Angels' Torii Hunter as the top three in right. The Gold Gloves are selected by a vote of each league's managers and coaches. At the AL shortstop position, Escobar was bypassed in favor of the Angels' Erick Aybar, the Indians' Asdrubal Cabrera and the Orioles' J.J. Hardy. Also left out was five-time winner Derek Jeter of the Yankees.
