New Zealand ground down Australia in appallingly wet and windy
conditions in Wellington to win the opening match of the Tri-Nations
series.

The All Blacks dominated possession but Daniel Carter's penalty was
the only score of the first half.

Doug Howlett's try finally made home pressure count after 62 minutes.

Stirling Mortlock crossed over after Joe Rokocoko dropped the ball in
front of the posts as Australia rallied but New Zealand held on for a
deserved win.

The rain driving aross the Westpac Stadium for the 101st Bledisloe Cup
clash created problems from the opening whistle with Stephen Larkham
slicing his kick-off.

The players struggled to control the ball and the result was a dour
and error-strewn first half with matters not helped by a whistle-happy
referee.

Carter's penalty finally opened the scoring after 34 minutes and put
New Zealand ahead but Australia continued to defend staunchly.

However, the match came to life after the break with hookers Keven
Mealamu and Brendan Cannon sinbinned for sparking a brawl.

New Zealand continued to press and finally - after Carter had landed
another penalty - managed to feed Howlett on the right and the winger
touched down for a straightforward effort.

The All Blacks looked poised to run away with the match but Australia
somewhow withstood yet more pressure.

And on practically their first second-half foray into the New Zealand
half, they were rewarded with a try.

Matt Giteau sent up an huge up-and-under which Rokocoko dropped, allowing
Mortlock to slide over the try-line.

That gave Australia hope but New Zealand weathered their brief rally and
Carter extended their lead with a penalty just before the final hooter.

Meeuws, Mealamu, Hayman, Jack, Maling, Gibbes, Holah, Rush.

Henry hails All Blacks


Graham Henry expressed his delight at New Zealand's "superb" 16-7
Tri-Nations victory over Australia in Wellington.

The win, after a try by Doug Howlett and 11 points from Dan Carter's
boot, saw the hosts retain the Bledisloe Cup.

"The boys played with huge character and commitment and they got better
as the game went on," the coach said.

"We could have capitalised more with the possession we had, but we're
happy and I have a lot of pride and respect for the players."

The match was played out in atrocious conditions, persistent rain in
the New Zealand capital saturating the surface at the Westpac Stadium.

The All Blacks won 80% of possession but were forced to work hard,
going in at the break with just a 3-0 advantage.

But they threw everything at the Wallaby defence in a fierce second
half, when Howlett crossed on 62 minutes, to seal the win and maintain
Henry's 100% record at the helm after five matches.

"It was a hell of a difficult one out there and a superb performance
in very difficult conditions, but we we won the game convincingly in
territory and possession," he added.

And Henry reserved special praise for lock Simon Maling and flanker
Marty Holah who were drafted in in place of injured duo Keith Robinson
and Richie McCaw.

"Those two stepped up and really played well," he said. "It gives a lot
of pleasure to see guys who weren't first choice step up and play top
class rugby."


Stirling Mortlock scored Australia's try under the posts after a Joe
Rokocoko mistake, but Wallaby coach Eddie Jones refused to look to the
conditions as an excuse for his team's poor performance.

"They won 80% of possession so that means they dominated set pieces. Was
that a consequence of weather conditions? I'd probably say no," he reasoned.

"I wasn't happy at all. We showed plenty of pride but weren't in the game
so there was nothing to be happy about.

"Our defence was good, but it had to be. You can't score points if you
are on defence all the time.

"New Zealand played very well. They dominated position and territory.
We only got 20% of the possession so in a way 16-7 wasn't a bad score."

Cannon handed two-week ban


Australia hooker Brendan Cannon has been handed a two-week ban after
sparking a brawl during the Wallabie's 16-7 defeat to New Zealand.

The 31-year-old traded punches with opposite number Keven Mealamu in
the opening match of the Tri-Nations.

Both players were sent to the sin bin in the 43rd minute but only
Cannon was cited and faced a disciplinary hearing.

Cannon's suspension means he will now miss Australia's next match
against South Africa in Perth on 31 July.

Tri-Nationals 在澳洲的network上有轉播(不是直播)

我索性在上星期六的早上完全不看電視跟報紙 因為不想知道比賽結果

到了下午五點開始轉播 星期五晚上在紐西蘭威靈頓的Aus VS All Blacks

一開始我跟我女朋友聽到隊長喬治(我是澳洲隊的人 跟廣大的ptt all blacks

迷對抗中) 因為受傷沒上場 心馬上涼了一半 而且我女朋友馬上說她不想看

了(請見我的第一篇po文) 而且還有踢罰球的  也因傷沒有上場

替補上來踢底線的球員一直沒把球踢好 再加上是All Blacks主場 而且是個

只有八度C的下雨夜晚 老實說 整場球澳洲隊被All Blacks壓著打 偽隊長一直沒

辦法組織好進攻 加上底線踢球的人一直沒辦法把All Blacks踢過來的球給踢回去

(其中有一球 他在澳洲隊達陣區接到All Blacks踢過來的球(小踢那種) 全黑的

球員已經在底線前十公尺了 照理說他是要把球踢得愈遠愈好 但是他竟然踢到

離底線十公尺的地方出了界 看到想關電視了) 要不是Tuqiri籍著場地的溼滑

接到了好幾顆All Blacks的球 分數就真的可能慘不忍賭了(我懷疑他打過棒球

而且是外野手XD) 說到場地溼滑 全場唯一的TRY是因為在全黑的底線 澳洲隊擋下

了一個全黑的踢球 然後澳洲隊的球員是在底線前兩公尺就開始滑 一路滑進去

的 我看少說滑了六公尺(應該很好玩)
