1: There's something on the ground. I know that it's a pen, but I'm pretty
sure you don't. Although I know what it is, I don't know whose it is. (An
alternative - perhaps more common - is 'Whose pen is that on the ground?')
2: More likely: everyone knows what it is and where it is, I just want to
know whose.
