Righty goes the distance, ties franchise high for strikeouts
By Rick Eymer / Special to MLB.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- Jason Schmidt threw a complete-game seven-hitter and set a
career high and tied a franchise high with 16 strikeouts, as the Giants
defeated the Marlins, 2-1, in front of 33,987 at AT&T Park on Tuesday night.
Schmidt (6-2) won his sixth straight decision and improved to 8-0 in 17 career
games against the Marlins. He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
The Giants won their third straight and fifth of their last six overall.
After setting a torrid pace through four innings, in which both Marlins
starter Josh Johnson and Schmidt faced one batter over the minimum, Florida
left fielder Josh Willingham led off the fifth with a home run about 15 rows
deep in the left-field bleachers.
The Giants took the lead in the sixth with a pair of unearned runs. Randy Winn
, who had extended his hitting streak to five games with a first-inning double
, reached first on Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez's errant throw.
Winn went to second on Omar Vizquel's groundout and scored on Lance Niekro's
single into left field. Willingham's throw to the plate beat Winn, but it got
away from catcher Miguel Olivo.
Moises Alou, in his first game back from a stint on the disabled list, drilled
a double into the left-center-field gap to score Niekro.
