The Great Wall of China / September 27, 2008
I visited the Great Wall of China today! It was a fun experience. I’d been
wanting to go for some time, and I had hoped to go after the Olympics.
Often I leave a tournament without having the chance to do any sightseeing,
so it was a nice bonus to be able to go and see such an important site before
I left.
I was very surprised to find out that the wall is 6,500 kilometres long! At
one time there were a million men guarding the wall, and twice that number
died building it. It’s an amazing place.
Unfortunately we didn’t have time to walk to the summit, and it was also a
little hot, but we saw some great views. I especially enjoyed riding down in
a cable car – it reminded me of being on a rollercoaster!
I will leave Beijing on Sunday to practice in Europe before the indoor
season. It’s been a very interesting trip. I’ve learned a lot about Chinese
culture, and I look forward to coming back next year, when the event is much
bigger, and it takes place at the Olympic site.
My next tournament is in Moscow. There’s still a lot to play for before the
season ends and I’m looking forward sto getting back on the court.
