Novak Djokovic has become the first Serbian Open champion
Novak Djokovic has become the first Serbian Open champion defeating Pole
Lukacz Kubot in straight sets 6:3, 7:6 (7:0). Novak as champion received a
cheque worth 75000 Euro and 250 ATP points in front of 8000 fans and clinched
his 13th ATP singles title.
“It is a great honor to be the first Serbian Open champion. Winning in front
of my home crowd is what makes this title special. It was not easy, even
though Kubot is ranked lower than I am. Everything is easier now, being the
favorite I have taken a massive load of my shoulders”, said Novak
Runner-up Kubot who is currently ranked 179 on the ATP World Tour received a
cheque worth 39.700 Euro and 150 ATP points.
“I congratulate Novak and wish him all the best for the remainder of the
season. The tournament has been fantastic and I believe that it will receive
excellent appraisal. I will take many memorable moments with me from the week
that has passed. I hope that I can regroup and concentrate on taking the
doubles title. Thank you Serbia and I hope to see you again next year”,
stated Kubot after his defeat.
Serbian President Boris Tadic congratulated Novak on his triumph and wished
him all the best for the future.
The finals match was followed by the closing ceremony of the first Serbian
ATP tournament.
What he was not able to achieve in the singles final today he achieved in the
doubles. The Pole paired with Austrian Oliver Marach and defeated Swede Johan
Brunstrom and Jean-Juliein Rojer from the Netheralnds Antilles in straight
sets 6:2, 7:6 (7-3). This is the duos second ATP doubles title together.
