Djokovic and Kubot playing for the title!
Novak Djokovic made it to the final of the “SERBIA OPEN 2009 powered by
Telekom Srbija“ after defeating fourth seeded Italian Andreas Seppi in three
sets 4:6, 6:1, 6:2. The first seed is scheduled to play “lucky loser”, Pole
Lukacs Kubot, who defeated Croat Ivo Karlovic earlier today in straight sets
7:6, 6:2. Novak will play his 22nd ATP final in his career where he has been
the champion 12 times and runner-up 9 times.
“I had a difficult and aggressive opponent and had no idea what to change in
my game. He took his chances and without the support from the home crowd I
doubt I would have come back into the match”, said Djokovic.
The dual between Ivo Karlovic the 21st ranked player on the ATP World Tour
and Lucasz Kubot ended with a straight sets victory to the Pole in a little
over an hour and a half of play. Kubot has become the first Polish tennis
player to have reached an ATP tournament final since 1982, the year Kubot was
born. Kubot entered the main draw as a “lucky loser” because of the final
minute withdrawal of Belgian Steve Darcis.
"I had a lot of luck this week. I am very happy with my win and I do not
think that anyone would have thought that I would make it to the final”,
stated Kubot.
Lukasz Kubot, paired with Oliver Marach will compete in the doubles finals.
Polish-Austrian pair, which defeated Wassen-Zelenay last night, 7:5, 6:2,
will play against Johan Brunstrom (Sweden) and Jean Julien Rojer (Netherlands
Antilles). In the semi-finals, they beat Spanish pair Santiago Ventura –
Marcel Granollers, 6:2, 4:6, 11:9. The single final is scheduled for 4 p.m.,
after which the double final will take place.
The MGM tennis complex and tournament organizers welcomed more than 400
newlyweds who not long before their arrival wedded at the “Stari dvor”
which is known in Belgrade as the “wedding of dreams”. The newlyweds were
welcomed by Serbian actress Rada Djuricin and Director Goran Djokovic on
centre court. The Director and the lovely staff of the Joseph Broz Tito's
Blue Train provided a tour to the representatives of the media and sponsors
of “SERBIA OPEN 2009 powered by Telekom Srbija”.
