Lazio dominated this match from start to finish, but proved disappointing in
front of goal.
Lazio's home form has left something to be desired this season and they have
not won a Serie A match since Jan 18. Atalanta have improved considerably
since Christmas and clambered out of the bottom four.
The Biancocelesti had a vehement start and charged forward with Cesar acting
as a third striker. Diego Simeone's powerful drive was delfected onto the
roof of the net after just 120 seconds.
Fabio Rossini turned an angled effort just wide of the far post, but it was
to be Atalanta's only first half opportunity.
The best chance arrived on 22 minutes. Simeone cut back for Cesar, but the
Brazilian drilled just over the bar from an excellent scoring position.
Atalanta opted to sit back and soak up the pressure as the pacey Lazio side
continued to create opportunities without the finishing touch.
Luca Marchegiani came on in the second half as Peruzzi suffered a muscular
problem over the half-time break.
Lazio continued to push, but as time wore on the tension made itself felt
and Atalanta emerged in the final minutes with a fine Cristiano Doni effort.
But the Biancocelesti would not release the pressure and it turned into a
late siege on Massimo Taibi's goal.
Simeone nodded a Stefano Fiore centre inches wide, while Claudio Lopez failed
to make the most of a good scoring opportunity.
