Lazio lost more points in their chase for the Scudetto after being held to
a goalless draw at home by Atalanta on Sunday.
Lazio threw away a two-goal lead to draw against AC Milan last weekend and
were unable to kill off Atalanta here.
The Rome giants are now eight points adrift of leaders Juventus, who beat
Como 3-1 on Saturday night.
Lazio boss Roberto Mancini had a full-strength side to choose from for the
game having decided to rest some of his better players for Thursday's UEFA
Cup game at home to Polish side Wisla Krakow in which the Biancoceleste
could only manage a 3-3 draw.
Despite that though Lazio were still unable to break through a determined
Atalanta defence.
Sunday's is the latest in a series of disappointing results for the Rome
club who were held to 1-1 draws by lowly Torino and Chievo in the games
preceding their draw with Milan.
Before those matches they lost 1-0 at home to Reggina, leaving Lazio without
a win from their last five league games.
Mancini's men had to wait until the 22nd minute for their first decent sight
of goal against Atalanta but Brazilian left-back Cesar blazed over having
been set up by Diego Simeone.
Atalanta failed to show as an attacking force until seven minutes into the
second half when Cristiano Doni forced Lazio goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani
into a save.
Marchegiani had come on as a half-time replacement for Angelo Peruzzi, who
finished the first half with what appeared to be a leg injury.
That opening was about as good as it got for Atalanta though as they were
forced back on the defensive for much of the remainder of the match.
Claudio Lopez looked certain to score after 65 minutes but his shot, having
beaten Atalanta goalkeeper Massimo Taibi, also beat the crossbar on its way
over.
Two minutes later Lazio had another opportunity to break the deadlock
following good work by Jaap Stam inside the area but this time Taibi was
equal to the danger, saving the Dutchman's shot.
Lazio continued to push forward as the game neared its climax and they
created two decent openings in the final nine minutes.
The first fell to Simeone but his header from Stefano Fiore's right-wing
cross narrowly slipped wide.
Simeone's Argentina international team-mate Lopez then had one lost chance
to snatch the win when he picked up a Bernardo Corradi pass inside the box
but the former Valencia hitman was unable to beat Taibi.
