Lazio’s hopes of reaching the last eight of the UEFA Cup were balanced on
a knife edge after the Italians were held to a 3-3 draw by Wisla Krakow in
their fourth round, first leg tie here on Thursday.
The Polish visitors benefitted from a nightmare performance by Lazio
goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani who gave away two penalties, both converted by
Wisla striker Maciej Zurawski.
Marchegiani, who was booked for tripping up Marcin Kuzba for the first
penalty, miraculously escaped a sending-off when he scythed down Zurawski
for the second spot-kick.
Nikola Lazetic gave Lazio a 22nd minute lead with a vicious drive, before
Kalu Uche levelled for Wisla after breaking the home side’s brittle offside
trap.
But the hapless Mariusz Jop undid all of Wisla’s good work by turning Enrico
Chiesa’s right-wing cross into his own net a minute before half-time to
hand Lazio a 2-1 lead.
But two moments of madness from Marchegiani turned the match in favour of
the Poles, roared on by several thousand travelling fans.
Zurawski’s two penalties put the Poles ahead for the first time in the
match, before Chiesa restored parity with an easy tap-in after a neat
cut-back by Claudio Lopez to save Lazio’s blushes.
Lazio coach Roberto Mancini lamented his side’s poor defending, but refused
to point an accusing finger at Marchegiani.
"When we lose, we lose as a team," said Mancini, whose side are fourth in
the Italian first division.
"The bottom line is we played badly and were punished for our mistakes.
"Having conceded three away goals makes qualification difficult for us but
we have a good squad and a strong belief.
"The tie is far from over but we know we have to go there and win."
Lazio striker Chiesa said he too was confident the Italians could go to
Poland and win.
"It is going to be very difficult over there but we have the ability to turn
things around.
"They may be favourites to go through now but that puts pressure on them.
"They will be playing in front of their own fans and will be urged to press
forward.
"Hopefully that will give us chances to catch them on the break. There is
still a long way to go. Anything can happen in 90 minutes."
