Overcoming European Disappointment

Much against the odds and in spite of having a smaller squad than most other
challengers, Sampdoria finished fourth in Serie A last season. That gave them
the chance to play Champions League football but they were narrowly knocked
out by Werder Bremen in the play-off round in midweek.

After losing 3-1 in Bremen in the first-leg last week Samp surged to a 2-0
lead early in the first-half and deep into injury time were 3-0 up, only for
Bremen to score and take the tie to extra-time where Claudio Pizarro scored a
stunner that knocked out the Genoese club.

Under new coach Domenico Di Carlo, who replaced Luigi Del Neri earlier this
summer, the Blucerchiati will aim to repeat their heroics of last season but
it wouldn't be easy for them. However, Samp went the entire league season
unbeaten at the Marassi in 2009-10 and this will again be a key for them.

Ambitions Soaring High

Lazio supremo Claudio Lotito is not known for taking failures lightly and
indeed after 2009-10's disastrous campaign in which the Aquile just about
managed to stave off relegation to Serie B, finishing in mid-table, he has
made it clear that this time such a failure wouldn't be tolerated.

Mark Bresciano, Gonzalo Barreto and Hernanes have been added to the squad,
although Lazio have allowed Thomas Hitzlsperger to leave on a free transfer
and Aleksandar Kolarov has been sold to Manchester City.

A top six finish is what Lazio should realistically attempt for, and with
Edoardo Reja at the helm they can aspire to such lofty ambitions.

Sammarco, Tissone, Rossini and Koman are out. Cassano and Pazzini will again
line up as the front-two.
