Each country has their own unique custom to memorize or celebrate a
national hero, a great leader or some legend people. In Taiwan, there is a
special holiday in the hot summer for an ancient poet, whose name is Chi-Yuan.
That is Dragon Boat Festival, which originated from the war era in
Chinese history. Chi-Yuan was a famous poet, a loyal servant for his emperor
as well. Unfournately, he committed a suicide by jumped into a river named
Mi-Ro Jiang for the reason that the king was not willing to take his advice,
Chi-Yuan showed his determination by his death. People in Chi's country was
moved by his behavior therefore they made rice dumplings and threw them into
the river, hoping fishes would not eat Chi's corp. Also, they searched for
his body by rowing dragon boats. From then on, people are getting used to
eating rice dumplings and rowing dragon boats to memorize this great,
nation-loving poet.
Dragon Boat Festival is a very special holiday and you can only find it
in Chinese-living countries. There is no similar custom in the Western
society, so it must be interesting and fresh to many people, especially for
people from Europe and America. People can actually experience those
activities, enjoy the fun and know Chinese culture more by this very
opportunity.
A rice dumpling has a triangle-shaped look, covered with leaves of
bamboo. It is made up with sticky rice, and other yummy materials including
pork, shrimp, peanuts, squid, dried mushrooms in common. Some are with more
creativity, even come with ice cream inside! I would like to have my foreign
friends not only give the dumplings a shot but try to make one by themselves.
People will go through the process and have much fun. As for the dragon
boats, races are held in some cities with rivers just like Taipei. Players
try to do their best to win the trophy. The rule is that the fastest boat
would take the flag first, and be the winner. You will see many teams compete
with each others, all of them having the same goal-be the fastest one!
Dragon Boat Festival combines both historical and interesting aspects,
making this holiday a wonderful chance to learn more Chinese culture and it
is definitely a special custom worth trying and adopting! With this
opportunity, people could feel you are a part of this society as you share
