Samuel Dalembert scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Sixers'
preseason opener Tuesday night against the Raptors. Wednesday night against
those same Raptors he scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds. The Sixers were
victorious in both games. Dalembert isn’t just playing well, he’s playing
with confidence – maybe best of all, the Sixers’ starting center is happy.
“Sam’s happy. He’s joking with guys again. He’s back to his normal self,”
said Lou Williams, as if an old friend had returned home. “We’re going to
need Sam and when he’s happy I think the better our team will be.”

Dalembert wasn’t himself last year; he was often maligned for his lack of
offensive contributions. He finished the year averaging 6.4 points and 8.6
rebounds and attempted only a little more then five field goals a game.
His non-involvement at one end of the floor sometimes affected his
performance at the defensive end. The end result was that Dalembert played a
career low in minutes (just over 24 per game) leading him to ask management
for a trade prior to last February’s deadline.

summertime conversations and training camp. To this point, Jordan has had
nothing but praise for Dalembert as a player and person.

taste of the Princeton offense can do that for a guy.
“You have no choice with this offense; everyone is going to get involved.
Anyone can be a passer. Anyone can be a scorer in this offense,” said
Dalembert. “You just have to have a little bit of knowledge of what they are
doing a little bit of basketball IQ.”

In years past, Dalembert might have posted up his opponent 15-to-20 times a

and focus elsewhere, which is what Dalembert says he did.
“I try to get a tip dunk,” Dalembert said, “try to get an extra possession
so my mind was always on trying to get the team a second possession not
really focusing on trying to get open to get the ball.”

Dalembert is not compelled to shoot the ball every time he touches it. He isn

His teammates would say the big man has shown in the past to be a capable and
willing passer.
“Sam’s always had a knack to want to throw passes on back door cuts so we
knew he could do it we just need him to make the read at the right time,”
said Andre Iguodala. “I think you just have to get that happy medium –
give him those options to make that pass at the same time keep it under
control make sure that if you are going to throw the pass you complete it.”

and make the right play.”

touches and I think out of everybody he’s shown the most improvement in
terms of he is ready to go everyday.”
Williams added, “This is a group of coaches that really try to lift guys up,
make sure guys are organized and know what they are doing. And I think Sam is
the type of guy that’s needs that. Sam is an emotional guy and he knows that
this coaching group has his back.”

of the last three seasons. The mental aspect, however, has been a different
story. Don’t expect Dalembert to be mistake-free, but do expect the new
regime to play to his strengths and make him a more effective player
