Donny Marshall scored four crucial points in the final minute of the game
and Brian Scalabrine led five Nets in double-figures as New Jersey held
off a late Philadelphia rally to post an 86-80 win at the Reebok Pro Summer
League, Monday. The Nets (1-0) led by as many as 12 points with 6:23 left
in the game before the 76ers (0-1), paced by ten fourth quarter points by
Sam Clancy cut the gap to 82-78, with 1:06 remaining. But Marshall converted
one-of-two from the line, and made a three-point play to seal the victory.
New Jersey led virtually the entire way, taking a lead they would never
relinquish on a reverse layup by guard Zoran Planinic. The Nets shot a
sizzling 64.7 percent in the quarter. Although they cooled down in the
second quarter, the Nets defense clamped down and held the 76ers to just
12 shots and led 42-34 at the half.
The Nets defense remained stingy in the third quarter as they held the
76ers to just 11 shots from the floor. John Salmons kept Philadelphia
in the game with 14 points in the quarter, including 8-for-12 from the
free-throw line. Marshall and Planinic each scored five for the Nets and
they held a 64-58 lead after three. A basket by Scalabrine and a 19-foot
jumper and a layup by Jason Hart gave the Nets a 12-point cushion at 70-58
with 8:04 remaining. Clancy and Salmons helped the 76ers get back in the
game and gave them a chance to win before Marshall’s heroics sealed the
victory for the Nets.
Scalabrine (20 points) and Marshall, (17) led the Nets. Salmons led all
scorers with 29 points while Clancy added 17 points and seven rebounds to
pace the 76ers.
