Efthimios Rentzias hit a 19-foot jump shot with 3.6 seconds left in the
game to give the Philadelphia 76ers a 67-65 win over the Milwaukee Bucks
at the Reebok Pro Summer League. The Sixers erased a seven-point deficit
entering the fourth quarter behind the scoring of John Salmons and Willie
Green to post the victory.
Milwaukee (1-1) went on an 11-2 run in the last 3:52 of the third quarter
to take a 52-45 lead into the final quarter. Desmond Ferguson and Alex
Scales each hit a three-pointer and the Bucks looked to be in control.
But the 76ers (1-1) came right back, scoring the first seven points of
the fourth quarter. Salmons made a lay-up on the first possession of the
quarter, Green drained a three and then converted a Milwaukee turnover
into a fast-break lay-up to tie the game at 52-52. After the Bucks took
a 60-57 lead, Rentzias hit a three to tie the game with 4:14 left to play.
Kyle Korver then hit a three and Salmons made a layup to give Philadelphia
what seemed to be a comfortable 65-60 lead with 2:16 left in the game, but
the Bucks came right back. Dan Gadzuirc hit one-of-two free throws and T.J.
Ford converted a Sam Clancy blocked shot into a fast-break layup to cut the
Philadelphia lead to 65-63 and after a big defensive stop, guard Norm
Richardson hit a 19-footer to tie the game. But Philadelphia ran the clock
down and set up Rentzias for the game winning shot.
The game was close throughout as there were seven lead changes and it was
tied 13 times. Neither team led by more than four from midway through the
first quarter through the second quarter, which ended with the teams tied
31-31. Neither team could pull ahead by more than three until the Bucks
went on their run to end the third, and that was matched by 76ers run at
the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Green led all scorers with 15 points and Rentzias scored 13 and pulled down
eight rebounds. Marcus Haislip led the Bucks with 14 points and Ford added
13 points, five rebounds and four assists.
