Iggy vows not to dally on offense this season By PHIL JASNER jasnerp@phillynews.com Posted on Thu, Oct. 12, 2006 COLOGNE, Germany - This is Andre Iguodala's third season with the 76ers. It's time. He knows that even more than you do. He has the security of having the fourth season of his rookie contract already guaranteed. He appears to have the confidence and security that accompany that, even if he's still not aggressively looking for his shot or finishing consistently around the rim. "I'm at an all-time high in confidence," he said. "I had a great summer, working out, improving on different aspects of my game. I'm looking forward to handling the ball a little more, to being a whole lot more aggressive on the offensive end." Over two seasons, Iguodala has averaged 10.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.66 steals. He has started 164 straight games. But he heard everything you heard: He didn't demand the ball often enough, he didn't shoot consistently from the perimeter, he didn't get enough touches, he didn't develop his intermediate game, he deferred to Allen Iverson and Chris Webber. Even in Tuesday night's come-from-behind victory over the Phoenix Suns, coach Maurice Cheeks yelped from the sideline, "Andre, you can shoot the ball." "If I recapped my season-and-a-half with both those guys, as I watch tape, I'm a little bit passive," Iguodala said. "I get the ball sometimes and look to give it up right away. So it's not like they dominate the ball; I get the touches, I just don't look for the opportunities to be aggressive, to attack the basket. I'll do that a little more. "When the opportunity comes, you have to present yourself, take advantage of it. My whole thing when I was first coming in was, I just wanted to play my role, to follow the lead with Allen, and when Chris came aboard [from Sacramento], to follow him as well... I feel I can be more vocal toward everyone." When asked whether there was star potential in Iguodala, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft, Cheeks said, "Stars come out." Iguodala doesn't argue the point. "I've had a few games where I've showed it, in little sparks," he said. "At different times, I need to be more consistent. One game, I'm more focused on offense, the next game more focused on defense, or I'm not really shooting. Then the next game, I'm coming out and knocking down shots. It has to be the same every night. The team expects it. I have to bring it to the table." He knows the team stayed basically the same from the group that finished a disappointing 38-44 last season, landing clumsily in the lottery. He knows that he, Louis Williams, Kyle Korver, Shavlik Randolph and Willie Green are still viewed as young players, but he doesn't like the connotation. "You're always going to have the label of being 'still young,' but you have to get in a mold where you know what's expected of you," he said. "To say we're too young, that's an excuse. I think we have to get past that." So, he was asked, is this his year? "If you're going to say it's my year, I don't think it's about points or certain statistics; it's just about my overall role," he said. "I'm playing a bigger role, whether it's scoring, rebounding, maybe bringing the ball up the court, playing point guard a few times, or just playing the same huge role on the defensive end, just as long as we get more wins and we're a much better defensive team." "Defense" has become a mantra for Cheeks. He wants it tighter, tougher, more consistent and more team-oriented, and he hasn't hesitated to make that clear in practices and games. For two seasons, Iguodala has been the team's best perimeter defender, even though he wasn't very satisfied with last season's performance at that end of the floor. "Last year wasn't good for the whole team defensively," he said. "There were nights we gave up a lot of points to a great player, and it's tough to stop [those players]. It really doesn't come down to one-on-one; it's team defense, everybody being on the same page." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 59.124.150.106
