Cheeks will find time for Carney

Show up in the top five in the NBA draft, and the expectation is that you'll
be an instant contributor, at the very least a rotation player.

Rodney Carney showed up in the middle, No. 16, taken by the Chicago Bulls for
delivery to the 76ers. He arrived with a reputation as a shooter, holding the
University of Memphis record for three-point field goals (287), and as a
defender.

He made a big shot down the stretch of a preseason victory over the Phoenix

Europe Live Tour.

said yesterday, after practice at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic
Medicine. "The way he has played thus far, I think he has a chance to get on
the floor. That's what preseason games are for, to put guys in different
positions, see if they can contribute.

The reaction has been "real good," the results have been mixed. Carney had 14
points, seven rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes against the Suns, went
scoreless in 10 minutes against CSKA Moscow, then shot 1-for-8 in just under
21 minutes in last Saturday night's loss to the New York Knicks.

Cheeks sees a young player with tools, a good start. It's likely that the
coach will take a longer look in the remaining three preseason games,
beginning tomorrow night in New Jersey.

That's why Cheeks has fluctuated between pumping up Carney and being the

"Rookies take a lot of heat," Cheeks said. "They take it from the veteran
players. Sometimes, the young guys can get a little discouraged because some

working before, I think you have to give a little more encouragement.

To his credit, Carney hasn't allowed himself to look ahead.

get better right now."
