THE 76ERS HAVE cleaned up their environment.

Morale has skyrocketed all through the organization. Postpractice birthday
cakes for the players,unceremoniously outlawed last season,
are back. Even zone defenses havereappeared.

As it is, Allen Iverson and Chris Webber have been responsible for slightly
more than half the points on a team that was No. 2 in scoring through Saturday
night's games. That's good, because Iverson has also been conscious of
distributing the ball and allowing it to frequently go through Webber on the
high post. It's also good because Webber has been able to play major minutes,
at least 40 10 times, with no signs of difficulty 2 years after microfracture
surgery on his knee.

would look good right about now. And Andre Iguodala often has seemed like a
forgotten man in the offense; in the last seven games, he has gotten six, five,
six, seven, seven, five and four shots.

the zone as a change-up look; the Sixers have had to resort to it, and even
that hasn't closed off the driving lanes.

even understand why, at this point, King would not want, say, Latrell Sprewell
or Christian Laettner. (A source confirmed that he did inquire about Toronto's
Eric Williams and free agent Darvin Ham, and it's more than likely that he has
inquired about others around the league.) I know he learned patience from his
days with Indiana executive Donnie Walsh, but I won't understand if he stands
pat and insists the Sixers are good enough to not only reach the playoffs, but
advance.

The Atlantic is the weakest of the East's three divisions; a first-place finish
will include a No. 3 seed. A second-place finish could mean a No. 8 seed, or
even the lottery. The Sixers aren't as bad as they looked in the second half
against the defending champion Spurs, but they're also not as good as the
six-game winning streak that followed their 0-3 start. My preseason number was
44 wins, and I'll cling to that for the time being; it's too easy and too early
to just get off the train. But they need help. They owe it to themselves, they
owe it to the ticket-buyers.
