IT'S A NUMBERS GAME

The great NBA players have come to be identified by their jersey number. For
instance, we all see No. 33 when we reminisce about Larry Bird or the No. 32
when we think about Magic Johnson.

We also all may recall how Michael Jordan made No. 23 a mystical number. Then,
after his first retirement, he returned at the end of the 1994-95 season
wearing No. 45, but met failure in the playoffs. He reverted to No. 23 the next
season and three more championships followed. He will always be No. 23.

The players featured in Behind The Numbers one day may be so closely associated
with the number they wear but we take a look at why they wear that number. Many
reveal that the number they wear goes back to their first team. Others honor a
relative or basketball idol with the number they wear. And some have their own
esoteric reasons.

Earl Watson #25 SuperSonics
Sonics guard Earl Watson is wearing #25 in the Green and Gold for the second
time.
Earl Watson 再度背負起金綠色的25號成為超音速隊的後衛。
A member of the Sonics as a rookie in 2001-02, Watson returned to Seattle in a
four-team trade last month. Watson has worn the number 25 since long before
joining the Sonics, and his preference dates back to a childhood hero.
01-02球季時，Watson 是超音速隊的新秀，而上個月的四隊交易使得他再度回到了西雅圖

"I grew up in Kansas, in Kansas City," says Watson. Danny Manning won the
tournament his senior year [with Kansas in 1987-88]. I worked at his summer
league every summer at the scorer's table, running the shot clock, and he was
always really nice to me. I was a big fan anyway, but because of his
personality, I became an even bigger fan."

More than a decade later, Watson joined Manning in the NBA and had a chance to
meet him again.

"My first year, I think he played in Phoenix," Watson says. "I talked to him
then, and he remembered me."

Watson wore 25 after signing with the Memphis Grizzlies, but switched it up to
#8 after joining the Denver Nuggets last summer.

"Something different," he explains. "I just wanted to do something different. I
think change is always good, but when I came to Seattle, I wanted to go back to
25."

“I tried to wear 15 in college. For some reason Coach (John) Thompson didn’t
want any of the big men to wear a low number. Everybody had to start at 30 and
up. When I said 15 they said, okay, we’ll give you 55. I had no one to look up
to for a role model, so I didn’t have someone to look for for a number. They
gave me 55, and I’ve worn it ever since. Now I see a lot of kids coming out of
college wearing 55, and they say they wear it because of Mutombo, and that
brings more joy to me than anything else.”
