Outside the Sixers locker room, just a few minutes after an announcement that
named Andre Iguodala as a finalist for the 2012 Olympic team (see story),
Doug Collins talked to the media. The coach was pleased.
"When he was trying out for the team, when he was in the mix for the World
Championships, my son Chris was working with the team," Collins said. "He
relayed to me that Coach K said he needed Dre to be the best on-ball
defender. He’s the guy you can put on someone to take him out of the game.
That’s his calling card. He can guard multiple guys and lock in. One thing
Coach K and that U.S. Olympic team is doing now is they’re rewarding people
who have made a commitment over the last four or five years. I think Dre has
a great chance to make the team if he stays healthy, and he’s gotten off to
a great start for us this year. I couldn’t be more proud of Dre."
There’s a lot of that going around. During a timeout in Monday’s
mid-afternoon clash against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Wells Fargo Center --
which the Sixers won, 94-82 (see recap), to preserve their perfect home
record -- Tom Lamaine announced over the PA system that the "entire
organization" is thrilled for Iguodala. The crowd cheered. Then some fans --
the rabid ones that Adam Aron keeps leashed up behind the visitors basket --
chanted "U-S-A." They did that more than once against the Bucks, regularly
resorting to merry jingoism while Iguodala put up 21 points, seven rebounds
and four assists.
“He’s in a good spot right now,” Collins said about Iguodala. “He really
is.” In an unusual season that’s already produced all sorts of surprising
and unforeseen developments -- from Spencer Hawes emerging as a significant
contributor, to the Sixers working a comfortable grove into the Atlantic
Division’s first-place couch -- that last part about Iguodala might be the
most unexpected twist yet. The eighth-year veteran is in a good spot at the
moment. The team is winning and he’s producing. The boos have been mostly
replaced by cheers, and when you hear his name mentioned, the accompanying
commentary rarely involves the words “trade” and “now.” With the way this
season is going, it makes you wonder whether many of us were wrong about
Iguodala. Or, if we weren’t wrong about him, were we too harsh?
Spencer
It has not been easy here for Iguodala. When the Sixers traded the other AI,
there were great expectations that Iguodala would develop into a superstar or
at least the organization’s next viable All-Star candidate. It didn’t
happen. When his growth as a player was stunted somewhere between very good
and great, Iguodala became an easy target for people looking to blame someone
specific for all that mediocre Sixers basketball. On a team that was, for
years, mostly made up of no ones, Iguodala -- for all his failings -- was
someone. He took the heat because there was no one else to torch.
It didn’t help that former general manager Ed Stefanski handed Iguodala the
Sixers PIN number and instructed him to withdraw more cash from the team bank
account than Iguodala could possibly carry. (He’ll make around $13.5 million
this year and $14.7 million next year. In 2013-14, he has a player option for
close to $16 million.) It isn’t Iguodala’s fault that he received a fat
contract, but that hardly mattered to the critics who would have happily
bashed him over the head with his overstuffed wallet if given the opportunity.
By the end of last season, it appeared that many Sixers fans and much of the
media were done with Iguodala -- and he sounded done with all of us, too.
After Miami dismissed the Sixers from the playoffs, Iguodala was asked
whether he expected to be in Philadelphia this season -- to which he
responded that he expected to be "back in the NBA." If the locals were all
too willing to drive him to the airport and send him off to an unknown NBA
outpost, Iguodala’s answer made it seem like he was happy enough to take
everyone up on the offer and leave town.
Over the last few years, I’ve written more than once that the Sixers ought
to trade Iguodala -- not because he isn’t a good player (he is), but
because the team wasn’t a contender and it felt like the time to try
something different. Not to mention that Iguodala has never been a good fit
as the face of the franchise. He has been a hard person for the fans to
embrace because, as one NBA executive told me, Iguodala is reserved and "his
personality doesn’t make it easy."
Iggy
Iguodala still has a lot of work to do on the off-court/promotion front -- he
ducked out on Monday before anyone could ask him about the game or his
involvement with the Olympic team -- but the other concerns about him seem
less pressing lately. With the Sixers atop the division standings this year,
it feels right -- even necessary -- to keep Iguodala around. Per usual, he’s
doing a little of everything for the Sixers this season. Entering the Bucks
game, he was second on the team in points (14.3) and assists per game (3.8),
and third in rebounds (6.2). He was also fourth in the NBA in steals per
game. It’s hard to imagine the Sixers being in first place without him.
什麼,他卻低著頭就走掉了。但在球場上表現,對他來說似乎是較為輕鬆如意的事情;
"I think Dre is a complete player," Collins said. "When he doesn’t have to
carry the load and have a huge night for us offensively, I think that plays
into his wheelhouse. He can make plays, he can rebound, he can make shots. I
just think if you put him in a situation where you say you got to go out
there and give me 22 or 23 every night, that detracts from his greatest
strength. When he can really focus in on defense, when we get in the open
court, that really helps him."
。」Doug表示。
It’s been suggested in the past, by Collins and others, that Philly had it
all wrong -- that Iguodala is actually one of the league’s best players, and
that he’s far more respected around the rest of the NBA than he is here.
That always sounded crazy to me. But now Iguodala is a finalist for the
Olympic team. And now the Sixers are winning. And now it doesn’t sound quite
as crazy.
