It figured that 3-point shooting would play a pivotal role in the Orlando
Magic-Philadelphia 76ers first-round matchup, what with the Magic having made
more 3s than any team during the regular season and no team having shot worse
from beyond the arc than the Sixers.

And so it has. Orlando's lopsided advantage from long range is precisely why
the sixth-seeded 76ers are threatening to upset the heavily favored Magic.

By knowing the Magic rely so heavily on the 3-point shot, the Sixers have
made it their mission to run them off the 3-point line whenever possible,
especially on fast breaks, when Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis are just as
apt to stop and launch an open 3 as fill a layup-producing lane. The result:
Orlando has averaged six fewer 3-point attempts per game in this series than
during the regular season. And most of the 20 they've managed to launch have
been contested, resulting in a 30.9 percent accuracy, 13th among the 16
playoff teams and 8 percent below the Magic's regular-season mark.

"For us to be competitive, we had to defend the 3," a Sixers team official
says. "We especially didn't want to allow open 3s in transition."

That, of course, is only half the story. Ratcheting up defense merely
requires a solid plan and players with the energy and discipline to execute
it. The surprising part is how the Sixers, after firing a league-low 31.8
percent from long range during the regular season, have blistered the nets at
42.1 percent in this series -- against an Orlando team that was third-best in
the league at defending the trey during the regular season.

How in the world does that happen?

The short answer: The Sixers are being choosy.

"Orlando gets you frustrated, and then you want to take the first available
shot," Sixers forward Donyell Marshall says. "But with all the good defensive
teams, they want to keep the ball on one side of the floor. If you can move
it from side to side and be patient, you can find weaknesses."

The Magic are also unusual in that most good defensive teams limit dribble
penetration and control tempo with a structured offense. Orlando, however,
seems content to funnel drivers at the shot-rejecting machine that is Dwight
Howard. Its offense, meanwhile, is predicated on having at least three
dribble penetrators on the floor at all times, thanks to point guard Rafer
Alston and athletic, versatile bookend forwards Lewis and Turkoglu. That
creates a frustration all its own.

The problem for the Magic is that Sixers forwards Thaddeus Young and Andre
Iguodala are even more athletic and versatile, making them ideally suited to
stay with Turkoglu and Lewis whether they're driving, posting or spotting up.
Those two, combined with Andre Miller, Louis Williams or Willie Green, also
allow the Sixers to match or go the Magic one better in the
dribble-penetration department. All of which has forced Howard to defend
forays from multiple directions (leading to foul trouble) and collapsed the
Magic's defense, giving the Sixers time to set their feet, check the wind
direction and then launch a trey.

Philadelphia interim coach Tony DiLeo has given the team the modest goal of
making five 3s a game. The Sixers made eight, five, four and seven in the
first four games of the series. "We don't get caught up in trying to prove we
can make them," says Marshall, the team's designated marksman who is tied for
third in makes (four) and percentage (44.4) during the series. "If we hit our
3s early, it's a good thing. But we don't press if we're missing them."

The numbers back him up. Even though the Sixers have been shooting the 3 so
well in this series, they have taken only one more per game (14) than they
did in the regular season.

DiLeo is also an X factor. Having spent a good chunk of his career as a
player and coach in Europe, he knew exactly what it would take to build a
3-stopping strategy. Philadelphia has decided to maintain mostly one-on-one
coverage of Howard, selectively digging or double-teaming him only when he
takes more than one dribble, gambling that he can't beat them by himself.
That he scored 31 and 36 points in the Sixers' two victories indicates the
wisdom of the wager. (It also exposes the hole in any MVP argument for
Superman II. Would a team ever dare Kobe, LeBron, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade or
Tim Duncan to beat it?)

The Magic's real go-to guy is Turkoglu, as demonstrated by his clutch 3 to
win Game 4. But he has been more effective during the regular season than the
playoffs for most of his career. According to one scout, when teams can focus
on him, it impacts his stamina and leaves him gasping down the stretch.
Guarding a relentless Iguodala has only added to that fatigue.
魔術真正的關鍵先生是Turkoglu，證據就是第四場比賽的那一記終場三分彈。不過生涯

That has been the Magic's collective trick all season. Now they're seeing how
it feels.
