Officially signed, JJ Redick says Sixers were his first choice

JJ Redick is the most significant free-agent signing by the 76ers since Elton
Brand in July 2008.

But Redick, unlike Brand — who wasn't the same player after rupturing his
Achilles during an offseason workout 11 months earlier — is healthy and
arrives ranked among the NBA's elite in one significant category.

Redick was fifth in the league in 3-point percentage (42.9) with the Clippers
last season and was one of 11 players to hit 200 3-pointers (he had 201).

He has been among the NBA's top five in each of the past three campaigns,
including No. 1 in 2015-16.

"I guess I hadn't really thought about that," said Redick in a Saturday night
teleconference. "I am a perpetual planner — I analyze everything. When I was
deciding where I would play basketball next, I was going back and forth with
about a million different things.

"I really felt this was the best fit for me on and off the court. We live in
Brooklyn in the offseason. Philly was a team on the rise. I get a chance to
play with some good young guys and play for Brett (Brown)."

The signings of Redick (one year, $23 million) and veteran power forward Amir
Johnson (one year, $11 million) became official Saturday, as did rookie No. 1
overall pick Markelle Fultz's signing.

The 33-year-old Redick, who averaged 15 points and shot 89.1 percent from the
foul line in 78 games last year (all starts), should help spread the floor on
offense with his perimeter shooting abilities.

丁丁23M/1y、Amir的11M/1y跟Fultz的新秀標準合約都在今天正式簽字生效。

"We're going to play through Joel (Embiid)," Redick said. "A lot of stuff
Brett runs is pace and space. I always felt I was a good fit with (that
style)."

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Redick said he had several two-year offers and a
three-year offer, but wanted to play for the Sixers.

"My first choice was I would end up in Philadelphia," he said.

Redick, who will wear No. 17 here, said he believes "there's no reason
(Embiid) can't be an anchor of a championship team because of his impact on
both sides of the ball," assuming Embiid is healthy. Embiid has missed 215 of
a possible 246 games during his first three seasons due to injury.

Fultz's deal is believed to be worth $7 million this year and $8.3 million in
2018-19, with team options of $9.7 million and $12.2 million for his third
and fourth years. First-round choices are slotted based on where they are
selected.

"Markelle Fultz possesses elite basketball skills, instincts and talent which
prompted us to move up to No. 1 and add him to our talented young core of
players," said Sixers president Bryan Colangelo in a release. "At only 19
years of age, the sky is the limit for Markelle. We could not be happier to
have him join our Sixers family."

The Sixers sent the No. 3 selection and a future first-rounder to the Celtics
in order to land the No. 1 spot, which they used to choose Fultz in the June
22 draft.

Fultz is expected to start along with Redick, Robert Covington, Ben Simmons
and Embiid for the promising Sixers.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Fultz averaged 20 points and shot 46.1 percent from
3-point range (6-for-13) in his two Utah Jazz Summer League games.

Fultz had to be helped off the court after landing wrong in the Sixers' NBA
Summer League opener against the Warriors on Saturday evening in Las Vegas.
He was later determined to have a sprained left ankle.

During his lone collegiate season at Washington, Fultz averaged 23.2 points,
5.9 assists, 5.7 rebounds and shot 41.3 percent on 3-pointers.

The 30-year-old Johnson averaged 6.5 points — his lowest total since 2009-10
— 4.6 rebounds and shot 57.6 percent from the floor in 80 games (77 starts)
with the Celtics.

Johnson expects the Sixers to be a playoff team in an Eastern Conference in
which three teams that qualified for the postseason in the spring are in
rebuilding mode.

experience in games."

The 6-9, 240-pound Johnson, who will wear No. 5, is expected to provide a
blue-collar mentality and leadership for the Sixers.

"Amir Johnson is an ideal veteran addition for our young basketball team,"
Colangelo said. "Amir is that iron horse type of producer who impacts a team
in so many positive ways on the court. His value will also be felt in the
locker room."

In other Sixers news, the NBA fined Embiid $10,000 for using inappropriate
language on social media. Embiid directed an expletive at LaVar Ball, the
outspoken father of Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball.
