Ferrero, Bryans Capture World No. 1 Rankings.
By reaching the final at the US Open, Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero
moved to No. 1 in the ATP Entry Rankings for the first time in his
career. The 23-year-old is only the second Spaniard and first since
Carlos Moya to capture the World No. 1.
Ferrero joined a very exclusive club on Saturday by becoming only
the 21st player in reach the top spot in men's tennis since the ATP
Rankings were established in 1973.
"To be at No. 1, it's a special day for me," said Ferrero, after his
semifinal win at the US Open against Andre Agassi where he clinched
the World No. 1 ranking. "I knew before the match that if I win the
match I will be a No. 1. So I'm really, really happy."
Also moving to No. 1 were Bob and Mike Bryan, whose appearance in
the US Open doubles final pushed the brothers into a tie for the
top spot in the ATP Entry Rankings for doubles. The Roland Garros
champions become the 44th and 45th players to hold No. 1 in the
rankings since the Doubles Rankings were first created in 1976.
The ATP Entry Rankings are based on a 52-week system used for
determining qualification for entry and seeding in all tournaments
for both singles and doubles, except for the World Team Championship,
World Doubles Championship and Tennis Masters Cup.
