Day 4 - Juan Carlos Ferrero interview
Thursday, May 27, 2004
Q. Can you tell us any commentary to the match?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think he played a very good match,
you know. He has a lotof talent, a very good forehand. He
moves very quickly. You know, I couldn't play my best tennis t
oday, maybe because I don't feel so good physically and I
couldn't arrive to the balls in the right time. You know,
always I hit the ball, you know, so late, you know, and I couldn't
push so hard.
Q. How difficult was it to play with that injury?
Did it slow you up? Did it affect your movement?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, here was okay, the rib was okay.
But I start to feel some problems in the adductor. You know,
in the third set, I feel some cracks, you know, strong cracks,
you know, and I couldn't move so well.
You know, that's it. It was pretty difficult to stay in
the match with two injuries.
Q. Did you feel, actually coming into this championship, I know
you made a late decision, that you really had a real chance of
defending your title or in your heart you knew you were only going
to last a few rounds?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, it's easy to say, it's pretty difficult
to defend a title when you are not a hundred percent. You have to
think day to day, you know, and we'll see what's happen.
Q. How good did you know Andreev? He lives in Spain. Did you know
him good?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I didn't know him so good. This is one of the
first times I see him. I didn't know how he play, you know. You know,
was the first meeting.
Q. Is it difficult to play against such a player, nobody knows who
is it?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Sometimes yes, because you don't know how he
play, how he going to hit the ball, you know, strong or not, if he
going to go to the net or not. So sometimes is tough to play like
this, but sometimes it happens.
Q. Do you still think you made the right decision to try to play
this Roland Garros especially?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, right now I have to say yes because
I played two matches and I have the opportunity to play some tennis.
I couldn't play in the last two months matches, you know. I had the
opportunity to play here. But I had to put injections, you know. Was
a pretty tough decision to take, but finally I take it so I have to
happy with this.
Q. What are you going to do now?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't practice until Monday, you know, and I
will start to practice on grass.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish.
Q. How do you feel?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, not too good. After my rib got a bit
better, I managed to train this morning without using anything
special, and I was feeling all right. It's true that I've been taking
things for my first match. In the third set, I started to feel pain
again.
Quite truthfully, I wasn't feeling too well, too strong in my mind. I
don't feel too well now. I think that's normal. After my rib started
to get better, now it's something else. It's not easy. It's one thing
after another.
Of course, people keep telling you, "Cheer up, you'll get over it."
But time goes by and it's difficult to see that I haven't been able
to play at all this year at 100%.
It's true that in Australia I never managed to play in top shape. I
always had one problem or another. Probably everyone has a bad year.
This is looking like a bad year for me.
Q. It's not very good to arrive on court in that physical condition
to defend a title.
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, it's true that after all the problems that
I've had this year, I wasn't feeling very well. The experts thought
that I wouldn't be able to do too well after being off court for so
long, all these injections, all these efforts, that probably it would
end up with some physical problem or another, which has been the case.
Q. You were in pain today?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, obviously it's never pleasant when things
aren't going your way. I lost the match. But I've tried to keep up. I
had Love-40. I was trying to come back into the match, then
everything went very, very quickly.
In the third set, when I started feeling really in pain, then there
wasn't much I could do about my tennis.
Q. The crowd wanted the match to go on.
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yes, but I knew I couldn't go on for long.
Q. On Monday you were thinking about playing or not playing. Do you
think you made the right decision or are you having second thoughts?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, about that decision, I don't know.
I don't know if I took the best decision. But that's what I decided
to do. Now I don't think I should regret it. I played a very good
match in my first match. I was feeling well. My rib was feeling
better. It wasn't my best match. Then today, it was something else.
I think it was the right decision, because that's the decision I
made.
Q. Are you going to rest until you feel better now?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't think I can do anything else. I'm
going to stop until Monday. After that, I'll start training again
and hope I'll feel better and see if I can overcome the problems,
the difficulties, if I can train for two weeks, try to be fit again.
Possibly I can do well on grass and get some good results, perhaps
Wimbledon and other major tournaments.
Q. Which leg is it? Is it the same thing you had in Australia?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: It's the left leg.
Q. First of all, I'd like to congratulate you for the efforts
you've done. What can you tell us about your opponent?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, I don't know how old he is, but I think
he's a player who is improving. He's very motivated. He had a good
opportunity today. He was on center court. He really wanted to win
this match. He's very fast. He has a good forehand. He has a good
serve. He moves around quickly.
I think if I were fit, I would be able to beat this player, and I
should win the match. But he's young. I think he's improving. I
think he has the possibilities to get to the top.
Q. You said a moment ago you were able to train in the morning
without taking anything. That means your rib was better. In the
afternoon, did you take an injection or anything else before the
match, an anesthetic?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yes, I did use something, because apart from
the fact that I'd been training this morning without any problem,
well, a match requires a lot more efforts than training. A couple
of days ago, I was still in pain, so I thought it was a good
precaution to take an injection today. I thought if I got through
the match today, we would see about the future, because I was
feeling better. But now I have another problem.
Q. This injury hasn't given you trouble during the match, the injury
in your rib?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No.
