Conchita Martinez, the Spaniard who beat Martina Navratilova
to take the 1994 Ladies' Singles title, defeated Austrian
Barbara Schett 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round.
Martinez was quick to take a stranglehold on the first set
and never let go. She might be 31 but, as Andre Agassi has
proved in the men's game, there's something to be said for
the golden oldies on the circuit. Martinez has had a solid
year, reaching the semi-finals at Indian Wells before runs
to the last eight at Rome and Paris. Last week she made the
Eastbourne final, losing to Chanda Rubin.
Down 3-5 in the second set, Schett saved a match point to
hold serve. It was a brief respite, however, as Martinez
held serve to finish the encounter in 68 efficient minutes.
