Martinez Takes Taylor in Two
by Lisa Zimmerman
Monday, August 25, 2003
With the wind swirling, veteran Conchita Martinez bested American
Sarah Taylor 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the 2003
US Open. Martinez, the women's No. 12 seed from Spain, rarely left
her perch at the baseline during the just-over-90 minute match,
firing slice after slice, interspersed with the more-than-occasional
moon ball.
In spite of several attempts to overcome Martinez's top spin, Taylor
was frustrated at almost every turn, unable to much more than launch
her own returns into space.
The rather slow and plodding match featured long volley after long
volley with the ball flying so close to the net it often appeared
to be skimming it. One of the few exciting points of the match was
a lucky, backwards over-the-head backhand by Martinez off a lob that
fell in, just out of Taylor's reach.
With only three aces between them (two for Martinez and one for Taylor),
both women struggled with their serves. Taylor's first serve percentage
was a mere 48% to Martinez's 61%.
The 21-year-old Taylor has made two previous appearances in the US Open
in 2001 and 2002.
Martinez, 31, from Spain is in her 15th US Open. Her best showings were
in 1995 and 1996 when she reached the semi-finals.
Martinez will face Alicia Molik of Australia in the second round.
