★Juan Carlos Ferrero reached his third Grand Slam final and first at Flushing
Meadows with his third victory over Andre Agassi in four career meetings.
With the victory, the 23-year-old Roland Garros champion became the 21st
player to reach No. 1 in the ATP Entry Rankings, taking over from the
American. He is only the second Spaniard to achieve the feat, joining
Carlos Moya who reached the top spot in March 1999.
★Ferrero was appearing in his first US Open semifinal and his first Grand
Slam semifinal outside of Roland Garros. Playing in his fifth US Open, his
best previous result was a fourth round run in 2000
(l. to eventual champion Safin).
★Ferrero is the second Spaniard to reach the US Open final, joining
Manuel Orantes who defeated Jimmy Connors to win the title in 1975. Orantes
remains the only Spaniard to win a Grand Slam outside of Roland Garros.
