TENNIS MASTERS HAMBURG, MAY 14, 2003
Gonzalez Roars Past Hewitt; Federer Falls
Chilean star Gonzalez wins in three sets as defending champion Federer and
former winner Kuerten both go out.
Fernando Gonzalez upset top seed Lleyton Hewitt to reach the quarterfinals of
the Tennis Masters Hamburg on Thursday.
The Chilean, who lost to Hewitt in the semifinals of last year's Western &
Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati, recovered from the loss of
the second set to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
It was only the third time Hewitt had lost a 6-0 set in his 357 career singles
matches (2000 TMS Rome vs. Magnus Norman in SF and 2002 TMS Paris vs. Safin in
final).
Gonzalez, the No. 15 seed, will now meet Argentine David Nalbandian for a
place in his second Tennis Masters Series semifinal. Nalbandian, the No. 8
seed, overcame German No. 9 seed Rainer Schuettler 7-6(3), 6-2.
Defending champion Roger Federer also went out on day four at the hands of
Mark Philippoussis, who had never previously won a match in Hamburg prior to
this year. The Australian came through 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 having fallen 3-0 down
in the opening set.
Federer recovered from 5-0 down in the third, saved match points in the
seventh game and had break points at 5-3, but Philippoussis held his nerve to
set up a quarterfinal clash with No. 12 seed Guillermo Coria.
South Africa's Wayne Ferreira caused another major upset when he defeated 2000
champion Gustavo Kuerten. Ferreira, making his 12th appearance at the
Rothenbaum in the last 13 years, reached the quarterfinals for the third time
with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over the Brazilian.
Ferreira now takes on Acapulco winner Agustin Calleri for a place in the
semifinals after the Argentine recorded a 6-3, 6-0 win against his countryman
and 1999 finalist Mariano Zabaleta.
Gaston Gaudio ended the run of Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal with a 6-2, 6-2
victory, while Coria ensured four Argentines were in the quarterfinals of a
Tennis Masters Series event for the first time with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over
Mikhail Youzhny. With the win, Coria moves up to sixth place in the ATP
Champions Race 2003 standings.
Meanwhile, Belgium's Olivier Rochus continued to turn his form around with a
straight sets win against Britain's Tim Henman. Rochus, who had lost all five
of his previous matches on clay prior to his arrival at the Rothenbaum,
recorded an impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory to reach his first Tennis Masters
Series quarterfinal and set up a meeting with Gaudio.
