WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Gonzalez: "I played such a great first set, then I gave him a chance in the
second and he took it. At the beginning of the third set I told myself that I
had to get on top right away and fortunately I did. The last time we played I
had my chances and could not take them so I'm happy I did this time. I was
able to play my game using my serve and forehand to win the points."
"I have lost to David [Nalbandian] the three times we have played. I would
like to do better here."
Hewitt: "It's hard to reflect, but I definitely had enough court time. I feel
like I'm more used to the clay court. I just got off to another slow start
today. I just couldn't get into the match early and once I got into the match,
I felt like I was getting back into it and starting to get on top there. He's
a tough player to play. He doesn't give you any kind of rhythm out there."
Philippoussis: "I definitely think it's one of my best matches on clay since
I've been back. Obviously it's one of the hardest guys on the tour at the
moment and very dangerous on every surface he plays on. For me, I'm the type
of guy, no matter who I play I'm not going to get intimidated. I've got some
big weapons and as long as I go out there and use them, attack and come in,
make them pass me, I'm a big guy and if they can do that, then too good.
"I got 5-0 up and then 5-1, I had many match points. I thought there was a
point on the line, but it was a let call. He had to volley for a drop shot
cross court and I got a little tense. At 5-3, 15-40 I didn't know what to do
out there. I was getting frustrated and then happened to get some first serves
in and just came out with a win.
"I was not supposed to play singles here this week. I had back spasms after my
match against Ferrero in Rome and I was thinking of only playing doubles with
Lleyton here in Hamburg. But then a couple of players pulled out and I got in
in singles and we did not get in in doubles."
Federer: "The first set was strange, but good for me. I started well, felt
good. I didn't feel good on my serve. I didn't get enough free points and
couldn't play as aggressive. I didn't feel comfortable out there after 3-0
until the end. That was tough. I wasn't happy with my game today, but I tried
my best.
"To go down 5-0 is the biggest mistake. Maybe I was a bit unlucky, the one
break point just didn't go my way. I could have broken back earlier to 4:1
and I missed my chance. I guess 5:0 was too much to come back, but I hung in
there, but it wasn't enough.
"All in all, I'm pleased the way the clay court season has started for me.
I'm going to take this to the practise sessions I will have before the French
Open. Right now the disappointment is big to lose such a match, because I
never felt that I got going after a 3-0 in the first set. It's quite
disappointing to lose such a match."
Ferreira: "I enjoyed it a lot, I had a lot of fun, but playing well and
winning makes it a even more fun囗t was very hard work. The first set
especially, I struggled a lot on my serve, I didn't get any free games. It
was a close set, and winning it was a big issue. Had I lost it, it might have
been a bit difficult. In the second set it was a little bit more in my favor,
I served a lot better, got through my serve games a lot easier, but still made
him work hard on his. The second set was a better reflection on my game."
Gaudio: "I'm happy with the way I played today, Nadal is a good player and I
hope I'll do as well tomorrow. Rochus won a big match against Costa and will
be tough.
"It's great to have four Argentines in the quarterfinals and hopefully we'll
all get through to the semifinals."
Nalbandian: "It feels great to be in the quarterfinals. I hadn't done very
well in the past few weeks. I did not play very well today either but he was
nervous, too. It was a strange match, it was cold and the court was heavy.
"Against Fernando [Gonzalez] it will be a difficult match. I'm not surprised
he beat Hewitt today, I knew he was the favorite on clay. I hope to play
better against him than in the previous matches."
Calleri: "I played really well today, he was a bit slow and I took the
initiative dictating all the points. I know I can play even better than this
as you have to step up each round you play.
"I have never played Ferreira before but he's an experienced player who was
in the Top 10. My coach watched some of his match against Guga today so we'll
discuss tactics later."
Coria: "This is only the second time we had played against each other on the
ATP circuit but we've known each other since we were kids. He beat me last
year in St. Petersburg 6-4 in the third so I expected a tough match. It's
good to be in the quarterfinals of a [Tennis] Masters Series again after
Monte-Carlo. I hope I will be around again on finals day."
Kuerten: "I've been playing well. I think I can still play a little bit
better. That is my goal, to go back to the court and practice and increase my
level that I'm playing now줮For me it was a tough situation there in the first
set, after that he started to play with a lot of confidence and played well on
the big points. You can either increase or waste your confidence in a game. I
just let too many opportunities go. At 4:1 I had the chance to win the set and
get into the match, but then he came back and it was tough to maintain the
level with him in the second set. I lost one big point there too. As soon as
you give the guy some chances he starts to play better and better."
Schuettler: "It was a tight first set where I had my chances, but played a
very bad tiebreak. In the second set I think I had breakpoints in three games
in a row and didn't make one of them. You can't afford that against such a
player as you could see later. I get broken once and it turns out bad. Then
he plays from the top and I made easy mistakes. So, I have to say, he played
better in the second set.
"Every match I win on clay is one step forward. Until last year in Munich
where I played in the finals, I never played particularly well on clay courts.
This year is the first year I'm playing better. I never managed to win a round
in Monte-Carlo, this year I beat Santoro in a very good match, although I lost
afterwards. Quarterfinals in Rome, Quarterfinals in Munich, here the third
round, so the clay court season hasn't been too bad for me so far. That gives
me more confidence for [Roland Garros], and more security to be able to play
well against good opponents on clay and to get further."
Nadal: "Gaston played well but I was maybe a little bit tired after the match
with Moya last night. It was a great tournament for me. I never thought at the
beginning of the year that I would play in these kinds of events. My goal was
to reach the Top 100 at the end of this year so this is going much faster than
I thought."
Henman: [My performance] was pretty erratic. Losing the first eight points of
the match. He was certainly playing some good tennis, but I was making the
unforced errors. Then I started to pick things up and play more consistently,
but still being very aggressive. I played a really good game to break him and
a really good game to hold my serve and finish off the set with 12 points
against me. You can't afford to do that at this level. Looking at players he
has beaten, he is obviously playing well. But I think when you lose a match,
you want to sort of shake the guys hand and say "too good", and don't get me
wrong, he played well today, but I am certainly disappointed in my performance.
"[Roland Garros is a] kind of a different type of expectation for myself, but
it's changing all the time, because I'm feeling more and more confident about
my game. The conditions are a little bit more favourable there and with the
way I'm feeling physically and the way I'm serving, I think it's a big
positive for the grass coming up. And irrespective of what happens in Paris I
know I'm in good steps for the next four or five weeks."
