Wednesday saw No.2 seed Marat Safin and No.7 seed and local favorite Younes
El Aynaoui, knocked out of the tournament in two close matches by two young
Spanish players, Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez. No. 6 seed Sjeng Schalken
took 2 hours 57 minutes to end defending champion's Fabrice Santoro run, while
top seeded Roger Federer breezed through his first round match as did Rotterdam
winner, Max Mirnyi.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Robredo: "I was trying to be so motivated because playing against Marat, it's
great. I try to do my best and finally I could beat him. The confidence of
winning a match and a top ten is great. In the last two months, I haven't won
an ATP match - I won at the Hopman Cup, so you start to lose some confidence."
Safin: "I don't think I am playing a game to win. I'm playing to just stay
there and everything I'm trying to do, I'm missing, or it's too difficult. It's
too complicated and I cannot make it. Right now I am lost. I think I'm playing
good but I cannot win. The only thing I can say is that I was there, I was
fighting but the luck was not on my side. I tried to do everything possible but
just lost. That's OK, the guy run a lot, he was fighting. His game is more
practical than mine. This was a different match to yesterday and I have no
answers."
