Sanchez Upsets Acasuso to Reach Quarters
Montanes, Vanek also win through
Spaniard David Sanchez produced a stunning revival to upset fourth seed and
former finalist Jose Acasuso to win through to the quarterfinals of the
Bellsouth Open by Rosen Wednesday. After dropping the first set Sanchez
stormed home to win 12 of the last 13 games of the match to claim a 4-6, 6-0,
6-1 victory. But Sanchez complained of wrist tendonitis after the match and
said that he was unsure whether he would be able to play Andrea Gaudenzi in
the quarterfinals. "I'm trying to get ready for Friday but I'm not sure at
this stage," he said. "I'll try my best to play and I'll get all the treatment
necessary."
Gaudenzi also came from a set down to beat eighth seed David Ferrer 5-7, 6-4,
6-0.
Albert Montanes and Jiri Vanek will meet in the other bottom-half quarterfinal.
Spaniard Montanes repeated his victory over sixth seed Fernando Vicente in the
same round last year, defeating his countryman 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2. Vanek defeated
Franco Squillari 7-6(2), 7-6(5) and has now won three tie-breaks this week.
