Costa Crushes Davydenko
Fourth-seed Albert Costa had no problems getting past red-hot Russian Nikolay
Davydenko 6-2, 6-2 at the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo Tuesday. The 21-year-old
Russian who captured his second ATP title of the season at the Estoril Open
last week played in the Principality for the first time, while Costa plays
here for the 10th time. The Spaniard's best result here was a final
After the win, the reigning Roland Garros champion was on hand for the
on-court presentation of a 3,5 meter high birthday cake to celebrate the
75th anniversary of the Monte-Carlo Country Club.
"I had a lot of respect for my opponent, knowing that he won a
tournament last week. But at the same time I knew that I was the
favorite. I played an OK match, even though the windy conditions
could have been better," said the Spaniard after advancing to
round two.
When asked about his current form and his chances as Roland Garros
approaches, the Spaniard replied: "I'm not feeling any pressure. I
know I'm playing well and I have five more tournaments to play.
For the moment I'm feeling very confident."
On Wednesday Costa will meet Spanish teen sensation Rafael Nadal, who won
his career-second match on the ATP circuit by defeating Karol Kucera
6-1, 6-2. The 16-year-old qualifier made his ATP-level debut at his home
event in Mallorca last year and defeated Ramon Delgado before falling to
Olivier Rochus.
Moya, a fellow Mallorcan, has taken a special interest in the teenager.
"When I am in Mallorca, I practice with him. Whenever he has
something to ask, I try to give him my advice. That's all." When
asked about Nadal's potential, Moya replied: "I think he's very
good, and you never know what can happen because he's still very
young. But he has a lot of potential. I think in two years
maximum he's going to be Top 10 player."
