Moya Defeats Wind and Malisse to Reach Round Two
Last year's runner-up Carlos Moya managed to overcome both Xavier Malisse
and the strong wind at the Monte Carlo Country Club. The second-seeded Spaniard
defeated the Belgian 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Tennis
Masters Monte-Carlo Tuesday.
"I just tried to put the ball in. That's all that you can do. But today the
conditions were very tough for both of us. I was just focused to put the ball
in and waiting for him to make mistakes," said the Spaniard after his opening
round win.
Moya, who captured the prestigious Monte Carlo title in 1998, now holds a
11-1 record on clay for 2003.
In the second round the Spaniard faces South African veteran Wayne Ferreira,
who ousted Swedish wild card Jonas Bjorkman in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
Dutchman Sjeng Schalken, seeded No. 9 this week, advanced to the second round
when his opponent Davide Sanguinetti retired with a hip injury at 6-4, 3-1.
Next up for Schalken is Korean Hyung-Taik Lee, who defeated Spain's David
Sanchez 6-1, 6-3.
French qualifier Julien Benneteau saved one match point when he defeated
Dutchman Raemon Sluiter 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(1). The 21-year-old Frenchman made his
debut on the ATP circuit in Lyon in 2001, where he lost to eventual champion
Ivan Ljubicic in the second round.
Finland's pride Jarkko Nieminen defeated Taylor Dent 7-6(3), 6-2 to line up
second-round encounter against the winner between Yevgeny Kafelnikov and
No. 11 seed Younes El Aynaoui.
