Nadal Reaches Career-First Quarterfinal
The Spanish teenager faces sixth-seed Nicolas Lapentti next.
Wednesday at the Synsam Swedish Open fourth-seed Mikhail Youzhny,
advanced to the quarterfinals by scoring a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win over
Argentina's Franco Squillari. The 21-year-old Russian, who competes
in the Bastad event for the first time, is looking to find himself
among the final four for the third time this season, following Doha
and Halle.
In the quarterfinals Youzhny will face No. 5 seed Mariano Zabaleta
for the fifth time in his career. The 25-year-old Argentine ousted
Swedish wild card Bjorn Rehnquist 6-1, 6-2, improving his record for
the year to 24-15.
No. 6 seed Nicolas Lapentti defeated Romanian Adrian Voinea 6-4, 7-6(5)
to find himself in his first quarterfinal of 2003. The Ecuadorian has
played in Bastad once before, seven years ago when he lost to Tomas
Carbonell in the second round.
Next up for Lapentti is Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal who scored a 6-0,
6-4 win over fellow countryman Albert Portas. 17-year-old Nadal who won
the Barletta challenger in March now finds himself in his first ever
quarterfinal on the ATP circuit.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Nadal: "I beat Portas in the Barletta final in April, and I expected
today's match to be tougher. I don't see myself as a winner yet. My
results this year have happened much faster than I could ever imagine.
I have more confidence even when meeting top players now."
Rehnquist: "Things happened very quickly in the match. I was very nervous
today since I'm not used to playing in front of this many people. The
only regret I have is that I should have played more aggressive tennis
against Zabaleta.
