Moya Opens Bastad Defense with Win
Tommy Robredo and Mariano Zabaleta also advance on Tuesday.
Tuesday at the Synsam Swedish Open top-seed Carlos Moya opened up his
title defense by defeating Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-3. In the next
round the Spaniard faces wild card Robin Soderling, who lived up to the home
crowd's expectations by defeating qualifier Markus Hipfl 7-5, 6-1. The Austrian
reached the Bastad semifinals in 2000 but there was nothing he could do against
the confident Soderling. The 18-year-old Swede reached the third round at
Wimbledon and advanced to the semifinals of the Besancon challenger earlier
this season.
Dangerous Hicham Arazi scored an opening round win over two-time Swedish
Open champion Magnus Norman 7-5, 6-4. It was Arazi's third straight win over
the Swede. In the next round the Moroccan meets No. 2 seed Tommy Robredo who
ousted Swedish qualifier Marcus Sarstrand 6-3, 6-2.
Newly-crowned Wimbledon doubles champion Jonas Bjorkman won his second
singles match win in six Bastad appearances when he defeated Argentina's
Mariano Puerta 7-6(4), 6-4. In the next round the 31-year-old Swede takes on
Spain's David Ferrer, who stunned No. 7 seeded Fernando Vicente 6-4, 6-3.
Spanish teen sensation Rafael Nadal, who like Moya hails from Mallorca,
stunned last year's runner-up, third-seed Younes El Aynaoui, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to
advance to round two. Nadal's second-round opponent is countryman
Albert Portas, who scored a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dutch qualifier Rogier Wassen.
Elsewhere fifth-seed Mariano Zabaleta reached the second round by
defeating Chile's Nicolas Massu 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Italy's No. 1 Filippo
Volandri made it past the opening round by beating lucky loser
Federico Browne 6-1, 6-1.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Norman:"I'm lacking match practice at the moment, but I'm pretty
happy with my game today, and the outcome of the match was pretty logical.
And my body feels fine right now."
About his new coach Mikael Tillstrom, who he shares with Andreas Vinciguerra
"It's good to be on a new team. Nothing much has changed, but I have a
different voice telling me what to do. And I've found some new inspiration.
Being on the same team as Vinciguerra guarantees a high level of tennis, and
I have a great partner to practice with. I think we can help each other a lot."
Nadal:"In the first set I played fantastic tennis. I can't
play much better than that."
"It's too soon for me to start talking about my chances of winning a
tournament."
Bjorkman:"The transition from grass to clay is always difficult, but with my confidence right now, I feel secure with my game. My game these days works better on clay. Physically I'm also in better shape than in the past, so I don't get as tired playing on clay as I used to."
About his second round opponent David Ferrer
"I've never played against him before. He's an aggressive player who hits the
ball early, so it'll be a difficult match.
