Moya, Grosjean Upset, Corretja Battles Back
Germany's Tomas Behrend won the biggest match of his career, defeating
top seed Carlos Moya of Spain 7-6(5), 7-6(2) on Wednesday at the MercedesCup
in Stuttgart. During the first-set tie-break, the 28-year-old German was
down 2-5, but then won five straight points to claim the early advantage.
Spain's Alex Corretja saved four match points to triumph over Belgian
Olivier Rochus 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Corretja is looking to end his clay court
woes this season. The normally dominant clay courter now has a 7-8 record
on clay for the year. And No. 6 seed Chilean Fernando Gonzalez proved to
be the dominant player in his match with 17-year-old Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
Gonzalez now meets Finland's Jarkko Nieminen in the third round.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Moya: "I didn't play well. He played very well and took his chances.
I struggled to find my rhythm. I made a lot of easy mistakes, but I
still had my chances."
"He deserved to win today. He played a great match."
Corretja: "For me, I haven't won a lot of matches like that this year,
close in the third set. So it was really important that I win one like
that. It's good to know like you are competing well out there and have
a good feeling."
"The conditions were tough since we had to stop twice with the rain. It
was pretty humid all day and the match itself was really tough, but the
weather isn't really the issue, more important is coming back to win the
match after being down."
Robredo: "I think that I won the match is the most important thing. I was
feeling pretty bad the last few days with a fever, but I'm feeling okay
now, so that's good."
"I hope that after winning a close match like that it will get my
confidence going for the next rounds."
On the conditions
"It's always tough in Stuttgart after it rains. The court and the
balls change so much. It was really heavy after the rain and it made
it tough to play well."
