節錄 PRIORITY TELECOM DUTCH OPEN AMERSFOORT, July 17, 2003 Defending Champion Chela Upset The Argentine loses to Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo Little-know Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo reached his career-first quarterfinal on the ATP circuit by upsetting No. 3 seed and defending champion Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 6-1 Thursday at the Priority Telecom Dutch Open. Before this week the 25-year-old Spaniard had won only one ATP level match since turning professional in 1998. That victory came against Hungarian Attila Savolt in Bucharest two years ago. His previous best effort this season was winning the Kosice challenger by defeating Tomas Zib in the final. Albert Montanes advanced by scoring a 6-4, 6-3 win against Italy's Giorgio Galimberti. Next up he will face the winner between Dutchman John van Lottum and Markus Hipfl of Austria. Their second-round encounter was interrupted because of rain when the Austrian was leading 2-1 in the first set. Van Lottum is looking for his second appearance among the last eight this year after losing to Sluiter in the 's-Hertogenbosch quarterfinals last month. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Chela: "I felt very uncomfortable on the court today. The conditions were very heavy with the rain. I kept on playing the balls short and wasn't able to use the court wisely. I wasn't expecting to play so badly. I had a very good first round win. Having won the title last year, I felt very confident on these courts. Unfortunately, the slow conditions favoured my opponent. I had never seen him play before and he surprised me. He has a great forehand." "When the top-seeds of the tournament were knocked out, I thought I had a good chance to reach the final again this year and defend the title." Ramirez Hidalgo: "I played very well today, really committing very few errors if any. I hardly missed a ball. The conditions were difficult today. I knew Chela's game favours the faster clay courts, so I had the advantage. I was getting to the balls very early." "I am playing with a lot of confidence. I came here having won a Challenger in Kosice (Slovakia). This win today definitely ranks as one of the best of the season." Montanes: "The wind and the rain made it a complicated match. Despite the weather conditions, I started playing very solidly. I made sure I wasn't rushing too much." "I knew Giorgio (Galimberti) beat the top-seed Martin Verkerk on Tuesday. Verkerk was under a lot of pressure in front of his home crowd. Having reached the Roland Garros final, people were expecting him to do very well here. Giorgio on the other hand, had no pressure. Verkerk should have won that match and I am sure he would have done under different circumstances." "In my next round, I'll play John van Lottum or Markus Hipfl. To play against van Lottum will be difficult. The crowd will be behind him and he will be really pumped up to be playing in a quarterfinal in his own country. I've played Hipfl before and beaten him. Either opponent will be difficult though. Any player that reaches the quarterfinals of an ATP event will be playing well. I just need to focus on my game." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.96.111
