Friday at the Priority Telecom Dutch Open local favorite Raemon Sluiter
fought his way into the semifinals by defeating Spaniard Ruben Ramirez
Hidalgo 7-6(4), 6-7(2), 6-2.
Spaniard Albert Montanes reached the Amersfoort semifinals by scoring a
6-2, 6-3 win over Austria's Markus Hipfl. This will be his second
appearance in a semifinal in 2003 after Vina del Mar in February. The
25-year-old Austrian played two matches on Friday, since he had to
finish his second-round encounter against Dutchman John van Lottum,
a match that finished 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in Hipfl's favor.
Montanes: "The match started very quickly and intensely. I started
well and found my rhythm. I was able to play my game throughout the
match and he couldn't do anything about it."
"Tomorrow's match will be complicated. Not only will we be playing
a semifinal at an ATP event, but Sluiter will also be playing at home.
He is a great player and I will try and keep the points long. If the
points are quick, that will favor his game. I like to play the points
out. My aim tomorrow is to concentrate on my game and play my best
tennis. I feel good on these courts and it would be a big result for
me if I reach the final. I am looking forward to the match and I hope
I enjoy it."
