Nadal Stuns Federer (節錄)
Seventeen-year-old Rafael Nadal of Spain picked up the biggest win of his
young career on Sunday night at the NASDAQ-100 Open, defeating World No. 1
Roger Federer, 6-3, 6-3.
Nadal, who is playing in Miami for the first time, scored his third
career victory against a Top 10 player and first Top 10 win on a hard court.
His prior Top 10 victories came in 2003 where he defeated Albert Costa in
Monte Carlo and Carlos Moya in Hamburg. Both of those victories were on clay.
Nadal has a 14-7 record on the year and reached his first ATP final
earlier this year in Auckland, losing to Dominik Hrbaty. Federer suffered
only his second loss of the season, falling to 23-2. The World No. 1 also saw
his 12-match winning streak come to an end.
The young Spaniard will next face Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, who reached
the fourth round in Miami for the second time in three years with a 6-4, 6-2
victory against No. 14 seed Jiri Novak. The No. 21 seed has a 11-5 record on
the year with five of those wins coming from his title in Vina del Mar last
month. Gonzalez also reached the fourth round in 2002, losing to Marat Safin
in straight sets.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Rafael Nadal: "I'm very happy because I played one of the best matches in my
life. Obviously, he didn't play his best tennis and that's the reason why I
could win. I mean, if he had played his best tennis, I would have had no
chance. But that's what happens in tennis. If a player like me plays at a
very, very good level and a top player like Roger doesn't play his best
tennis, I can win."
"I played almost perfect tennis today because I was playing inside the court,
dominating the exchanges and pressing him so he couldn't play his game. But
one thing I forgot, I served extremely well today, probably I never served
like this in my life. That was really the key."
"I knew that the most important point was that I couldn't let him play his
own game, because if he can play his own game, he wins 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2
like it's happening this year and it's never happened in tennis before. So
from the first point I knew that I had to dictate the exchange for him not to
be able to play his game."
Roger Federer: "I think it's always difficult to play someone for the first
time, first of all. But I think, overall he played a very good match. He was
the better player today. It was tough for me to, I mean, I had time to get
the rhythm, but he played very aggressive and I couldn't quite play maybe the
way I wanted to."
" He doesn't hit the ball flat and hard. It's more with a lot of spin, which
makes the ball bounce, bounce high, and that's a struggle I had today. I
tried to get out of it, but kind of couldn't. I thought in the beginning I
maybe wasn't going for my shots enough, where in the end I thought I was
hitting the ball better. But I felt the match maybe kind of went his way, and
he hit some really incredible shots. That's what youngsters do."
