Ferrero beats friend in first round at Valencia

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) -- Defending champion Juan Carlos Ferrero beat close friend Israel Matos Gil 6-2, 7-5 Tuesday in the first round of the Valencia Open.
It was the French Open champion's first match since leading Spain past the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.
``Playing your best friend for the first time ever in a tournament isn't easy for anybody,'' Ferrero said. ``In the second set I had some ups and downs, and he started very well.''
His next opponent at the clay-court tournament is Jan Vacek, the man he beat in the first round of the 2003 U.S. Open.
In other action, second-seeded Feliciano Lopez defeated Igor Andreev 6-4, 6-2, 2003 runner-up Christopher Rochus downed Austrian qualifier Werner Eschauer 6-4, 6-2, and Albert Montanes eliminated John van Lottum 6-3, 6-1.
Rochus will face 2002 French Open champion Albert Costa, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Galo Blanco.
Also, sixth-seeded Alberto Martin beat Nicolas Almagro 6-2, 6-4, and Fernando Vicente outlasted Oscar Hernandez, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6
