Conchita Martinezimproved her dominant record against Amanda Coetzer to 14-3 when she defeated
her fellow veteran 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals of the women's
singles, where she will meet top seed Kim Clijsters. Martinez, a finalist here
in 1992 and '96, had endured a modest season before arriving in Indian Wells,
reaching quarterfinals in Doha and Dubai after back-to-back first round
losses in Sydney and at the Australian Open.
Martinez said: "I'm playing much more consistent. I didn't start very well in
Australia. I played much better in Qatar and Dubai. Here it's just great to
be in the semifinals again, in a Tier I. Yeah, I'm playing very good tennis. Hopefully I can keep it up.
"I have to play a little bit more aggressive [in the semifinals] because
Clijsters is going to hit the ball much harder than Coetzer. She's going to
try to keep hitting hard and moving me and everything, so I can just not play
high balls."
