TIE PREVIEW
Although this will be the fifth meeting between these two great Davis Cup
nations, with the series tied at 2-2, the head-to-head record will have
little bearing here. The last clash was in 1972, with all four previous ties
coming when the Czech Republic competed as Czechoslovakia. Last year's
runner-up Spain could not have asked for a trickier tie away as the Czech
side is strong on any surface, and accordingly has chosen a fast carpet court
to try to unsettle the clay-loving Spaniards. However, in last year's final
on the grass in Melbourne, Spain proved that it can adapt to any challenge,
so a fascinating tie should be in store.
